Niet dat er geen goede films meer gemaakt worden (ongetwijfeld is dat wel het geval), maar ze geraken hier niet meer in de zalen. Distributie- en promotiekost, maffieuze Hollywood-studio’s, slechte return-on-investment, blahblah. Heb in 2012 ondertussen al gezien:

“Mission Impossible” (in zaal): prima – en zeer onderhoudend – bevonden. Tom Cruise valt voor 1 keer goed te pruimen. Spektakulaire Dubai flatgebouw-scene, onder meer. Maar veel meer blijft er niet echt van bij. Niet dat dat altijd nodig is, van de Die Hard en Bourne films herinner ik me ook niet veel meer dan het krampachtig vertrokken smoelwerk van Bruce Willis en het o zo jammere verscheiden van Franka Potente (althans haar personage), maar dat doet niks af van het feit dat het allemaal bijzonder aangenaam amusement was.

“Harry Brown” (Netflix): het kostte me aanvankelijk veel moeite om mezelf te overtuigen dit op te zetten: een geriatrische vigilante-flick is niet meteen een genre dat me aanspreekt en met het heengaan van Charles Bronson hoopte ik het indertijd begraven te zien, maar in deze prent speelt Michael Caine mee. Ja, de Michael Caine uit het Madness-liedje en uit het weergaloze Get Carter. En uit The Man Who Would Be King. Enzovoort, enzoverder. Caine doet het allemaal zeer overtuigend en aangrijpend, en de film schetst een uitermate deprimerend, dystopisch beeld van de Britse suburbs. Die stadsdelen waar men riots organiseert, jawel. Deprimerend op een ramptoeristische wijze, zodat je toch blijft kijken.
