Frank Taylor from Google Earth Blog showcasing the pretty amazing 3D rendering of downtown Denver in Google Earth; this is probably related to the recent release of a new update of Sketchup (version 6) which Google wants to show off, and which is still my favorite drawing program – I’m not exactly using it to create 3D buildings, but rather to illustrate/visualize all our great inventions here at PARC . We bought the Pro version about a year ago and I’m pleased that the update with its new features is free – the regular version is free by default of course. (Interesting, while I’m writing this, the site seems down.)

Have the massive snow storms of past weeks in Denver and Boulder (headquarters of Sketchup) perhaps improved productivity? If you’re stuck in the house, what else can you do but coding?

Update: They do maintain a good sense of humour, up in Boulder:

Somewhat strange: did Google perhaps feel they spent enough after the acquisition, so there wasn’t room for some extra servers?

Dit houdt natuurlijk steek voor Google, dat gaarne een hele community amateurs 3D-modellen voor hen gaat zien opbouwen in Google Earth. Ik moet mij gelukkig niet als een idioot gaan voelen omdat ik indertijd Sketchup heb gekocht, aangezien de gratis versie niet alle functionaliteit bevat en bijvoorbeeld enkel bestanden kan bewaren in Google Earth formaat. Het is verder wachten tot Google Earth textures ondersteunt, en dan gaan er spektakulaire dingen te zien zijn. Meer hierover op de Google Earth blog.
‘In related news’, er blijkt (eindelijk) wat beweging te zijn wat betreft Google Maps in Europa. Zelfs het vaderland is nu geheel beschikbaar (hoewel het hiervoor gelinkte artikel Belgie niet eens vermeldt), zoals bijvoorbeeld hier te zien is. Helaas zijn de meeste satelliet-beelden van Belgie nog steeds van absoluut ondermaats resolutie-niveau. Kan mij trouwens iemand uitleggen waarom de streek rond Mechelen wel in hoge resolutie te zien is en bijvoorbeeld Antwerpen of Gent niet – de wraak van de Maneblussers? Zit er een Mechelaar in het Google-team in kwestie?

Though riding something like this may pose some obvious problems, I would love to try it out – I imagine doing my trip to Moab with it. When I saw this parked at the Sea Otter village it immediately drew my attention and struck me as the creation of an artistic and adventurous mind. I had heard about him earlier (my Beemer-crazy co-worker knew about the guy with the bike + bike rack), so now I’ve seen his bike and even chatted with him (on mtbr.com):
Ricardo Kuhn, aka Patineto: industrial designer, expatriate from Colombia, bike enthousiast, running his company Motomacondo, and overall interesting person. Check out his site and his photo’s, for all kind of coolness and bike goodies…

Dit heeft natuurlijk alles met Google Earth te maken, waarvoor Sketchup een populair 3D design tool geworden was – voorbeelden van modellen gemaakt met Sketchup zijn het Vrijheidsbeeld in New York en de Eiffeltoren in Parijs. Het is sinds een paar maand tevens mijn favoriete tekentool. De makers van Sketchup, het softwarebedrijfje @Last, blijven naar verluid in hun kantoren in Boulder, Colorado zitten, en worden voolopig dus niet (helemaal) geassimileerd in het Googleplex in Mountain View.
