Horny

No, it’s not what you think. We’re talking here about Phrynosoma coronatum, better known as the (California) horned lizard, even better known by its nickname, the ‘horny toad’ (though it is no toad, but lizard species). Somewhat endangered (it’s a ‘Special Concern’ species, both federally and in the state of California), though not an uncommon sight in Henry Coe park.

They are rather awesome as they can squirt blood from their eyes when upset, to shock and awe any potential predators. This one seemed quite at ease as he or she didn’t mind the attention…
(with apologies for the unsharp photo, the autofocus of my little camera tends to act up sometimes in Macro mode)
