Fossett

So Steve Fossett’s plane seems to have been identified and located here (Google Earth link). This is in a remote area of the Sierra Nevada range near Mammoth Lakes, a favorite area of mine (yes, to mountain bike and ski, but also camp and hike). The spot is in the Minaret Lake area (the mountain range in the background of the pic below, near Mount Ritter). The eastern slopes of the Sierra are much steeper and more jagged (hence pretty) than the gentle west side. And, still extremely remote and almost uninhabited, which of course adds to its allure. A winter crossing of the Sierra on my randonnee short skis is actually on my to-do list (though, very far back, as I need to gain more experience with them and identify some other nuts to do this with). Too bad for Steve Fossett, but this area seems to fit his personality: untamed, wild, adventurous.

Palin-tology

She won’t be asked tonight during the debate about dinosaurs but she really should. Zina Saunders meanwhile expresses it better than can be done with words: check out her brilliant art. In particular, how she captures the maniacal, frantic, bring-on-the-Rapture type facial expression of her subject is par none!
