Terwijl ik die trieste circusclowns Bush en Poetin bezig zag op TV, gingen mijn gedachten onverwijld naar ‘Bulls on Parade‘ - waar zijn Rage Against The Machine als je ze nodig hebt? De reunie op Coachella had ik gemist (te ver, te heet, geen tijd) - gelukkig is er iTunes, zodat ik snel ‘Bulls’ door de living kon doen weergalmen - wat een fantastisch nummer vol fantastische riffs!

Nog meer fantastische riffs ga ik binnenkort moeten missen, aangezien het op zaterdag in Shoreline te Mountain View BFD is, met onder meer Queens of the Stone Age, Boc Party zo meer; missen zal ik dat allemaal aangezien ik het oude continent kom aandoen!

Front and rear shocks are coupled by a pneumatic line that runs through the frame’s down tube - resulting in on-the-fly adjustability of the bike’s geometry: pushing down on the fork while pressing a button on the handlebar gives you a steep head angle, suitable for the climbs, while compressing the rear shock slackens the head angle. It works great! But as my friend K always says: elegant innovative German design also tends to fail in elegant ways - pneumatic and hydraulic lines on a mountain bike generally don’t help reliability much (cfr. Ayatola’s splattered hydraulic brake in Moab), but the guy from Bike and Bean in Sedona (excellent shop, btw) claims he hasn’t seen any problems with the Bionicon yet.
I took one on a ride around Cathedral Rock in Sedona, and had an excellent time with it.

Even under normal conditions, I try to avoid the Maze as the plague - the Maze is the confluence of freeways 580, 80 and the toll lanes leading to the Bay Bridge in Emeryville, in the East Bay, just opposite San Francisco. It can be a nightmarish traffic hell, even on normally ‘calm’ times or days.
And this night, in pure comic book / action flick style, a tanker truck has exploded on it, oblitering part of the freeway including a ramp that collapsed on the roadway below. They’re talking about a month to have everything fixed - so folks, don’t get yourselves near there any time soon!

Last friday I got this message from a bike friend:

He was planning on doing a ride with a few folks in Henry Coe State Park the next day, and the 10k from the picture was referring to *10000 feet of climbing*.

Henry Coe is notorious for its steep trails, and 10k feet of climbing in over 40 miles sounded like… a good challenge, though of the rather nightmarish kind.

It turned out to be one of the greatest and toughest rides I’ve ever done - Durango was perhaps a bit harder but that was mainly because of the weather conditions and altitude. Some of the climbing on our ‘Kitten ride’ was brutal and relentless and we had to hike-a-bike more than we’d hoped for. A lot of the downhill on the other hand was fantastic and my Yeti was great on this - though a bit heavy and with a non-ideal gearing for the steep climbs (largest cog in the back only 32 teeth), it was coasting like a dream on the rollers and felt awesome on the fast, winding descents. The two thoughest climbs, Mac’s Corral and Vasquez, felt like they would never end though.

As per Jeff, a very nice stretch of the legs indeed!

Standing room only today during PARC’s Forum. The speaker was JB Straubel, CTO and part of the founding team of Tesla Motors, creators of the all-electric sports car Tesla Roadster.

The Tesla Roadster is an ‘electric car for people who like cars’ - hence the chassis and suspension setup, licensed from Lotus (cfr. the Elise), and the gorgeous body and styling. Add a three phase AC-induction motor, not much different from what Nicola Tesla came up with more than a hundred years ago, with a flat (up to a point) torque curve and 248 hp peak power, and you go from 0 to 60mph in 4 seconds.

Straubel explained the radical and enabling idea behind Tesla Motors was to make use of… laptop battery cells. Most modern batteries used in laptops and electronic equipment are lithium-ion based and consist of many smaller individual lithium-ion cells that are packaged together to form a larger unit. These cells make up a huge market, and a whole industry is continuously improving their performance and lowering their cost. By using these cells as components in their battery packs, Tesla Motors can basically piggy-back on the lithium-ion cell industry and offer much better performance, energy density and range (up to 200 miles) than was the case for earlier generation electric vehicles.

And they don’t intend to remain a sports car company (the Roadster goes for $100k and will be deployed starting in the fall of this year): a (luxury) sedan is in the making as well, which will go for $50k.

Some questions in the audience pointed to the typical shortcomings associated to electric vehicles, such as the fairly large charge time required to recharge the battery pack (3.5 hours using the grid, 1 hour using a higher voltage source), making the car not suitable for road trips. I don’t think this will be an issue for the Roadster (a toy car really, be it a gorgeous one), but perhaps it will be for the upcoming sedan, which will be competing against plug-in hybrids, that obviously don’t have this problem - all-electric on the other hand will have lower maintenance requirements and costs.

Another question was whether a $100k car can really be considered fully ‘green’ (or, CO2 neutral) even if you assume that you’ll charge it exclusively with a ‘green’ electricity source such as photovoltaics - basically questioning whether the capital cost (energy that went in to create the car) will really be offset by the car’s use over its lifetime (it’s warranted for 100k miles or 5 years). Straubel (in the picture on the right, standing next to the Roadster) replied by pointing a.o. to the fact that a lot of ‘expensive’ materials are in fact recycled (e.g. the cobalt in the battery cells) and I do indeed think that the car can be safely considered ‘green’ - a lot of the cost is in the materials themselves (which can and will be reused), not necessarily in energy required to fabricate or machine them.

A concern I have is that the car is totally silent - just like hybrids when they’re in slow traffic, but unlike the latter the Roadster will be used to race up and down hilly roads frequented by bicyclists and motorcyclists, who won’t hear a thing when one of these beauties is about to zip by. I mentioned this to one of their engineers on site but they didn’t seem too concerned; I can only hope they’re right.

Het is opnieuw Sea Otter Classic tijd, en het was geweldig. Mijn race startte uitermate vroeg (7.44am!) waardoor ik gelukkig de ongelooflijke stortbui rond de middag niet op de fiets moest meemaken, en ik heb mijn voornaamste doelstellingen met verve ingelost:

• Een stuk rapper rijden dan vorig jaar
• Niet crashen!
• Lol hebben
• De titanium hardtail die ik voor de gelegenheid geleend had, niet (al te fel) beschadigen

Mijn voormalige manager droomt hier ook al een tijdje van (lang voordat hij PARC vervoegde evenwel)…

Zoals gezegd, SushiYa gaat binnenkort sluiten, dus moeten we van deze laatste weken volop profiteren. Afgelopen week probeerde ik een nieuwe specialiteit uit, behoorlijk duur (meer dan 4 dollar voor 1 stukje sushi van zo’n 2 bij 4 cm), genaamd Mirugai.

Het vlees, door Hiroshi op eccentrieke wijze in een dun reepje gesneden uit een vreemd uitziende klomp, had een redelijke unieke textuur en *bewoog* nog een beetje - of was het mijn op hol geslagen verbeelding? Maar het smaakte redelijk goed en verfrissend.

Onze chef deed er wat mysterieus over, en dus zocht ik later een en ander op: mirugai is Japans voor ‘geoduck‘ aka ‘gooye duck’ aka surf clam aka jumbo clam. In het schoon Vlaams iets als ‘jumbo schaaldier’ of ’surfschelp’? Het betreft een reusachtig schaaldier dat in de noordelijke Pacific wordt aangetroffen, ingegraven in de zeebodem nabij de kust. Het is een van de langst levende dieren (150 jaar) die er bestaan, waardoor ik mij ineens een stuk schuldig begon te voelen. Het dier leeft in een schelp, waaruit een enorme tentakel groeit - maak hierbij uw eigen suggestieve grol:

En ja, wanneer het stukje sushi wordt afgesneden, leeft het ding nog, zoals Hiroshi wist te bevestigen!

Al goed dat ik vorige maand de Hollywood Hills en het Hollywood teken ben gaan opzoeken - na gisteren zou het een nogal aangebrande bedoening geweest zijn.
Twee teenagers hebben de hills in de fik gestoken - bij wijze van misplaatste aprilgrap? Ze beweerden wat met aanstekers gespeeld te hebben waarna een en ander per ongeluk uit de hand liep - de klassieke verdediging van de pyromaan?
Het Hollywood teken is niet beschadigd - hopelijk levert het incident beneden in de vallei geen inspiratie op voor een nieuw rampenfilm scenario.

Verschrikkelijk nieuws!

Mijn favoriete sushi place - SushiYa op University Avenue in Palo Alto, vijf minuten wandelen van bij mij thuis -sluit binnenkort blijkbaar de deuren. De chef, Hiroshi Kato, vertrekt aanstaande zaterdag terug naar Japan, heeft hij mij zonet verteld. Ik beschik gelukkig over zijn contactgegevens zodat ik hem in Nagayo kan gaan opzoeken - daar zal hij zijn eigen joint opstarten.

SushiYa is een geweldig hole-in-the-wall type etablissement met overheerlijke specials als daar zijn de Binkara of Godzilla, alsook sobere maar superlekkere rolls zoals de spicy tuna of shrimp roll. Ik ga dat ernstig missen - er zijn honderduizend andere sushi restaurants hoor ik u zeggen maar dit heeft iets speciaals. Het lekkere eten, de sfeer, het personeel (a la Cheers, ‘where everybody knows your name’), de Valley entrepreneur types die er komen rondhangen, de vele website-besprekingen met de Ayatola aan de bar!
Wat nu?

P.S.: hm, de 27e maart en nog maar de tweede post van de maand - ik besef dat de blog een beetje naar motteballen begint te ruiken maar ik speel met de idee om wat veranderingen door te voeren… binnenkort meer hierover.

…omdat Martin Scorsese eindelijk zijn verdiende loon heeft gekregen!

De Academy gedroeg zich weliswaar een beetje als een scheidsrechter die een compensatie-penalty toekent - de legendarische regisseur die getooid met wenkbrauwen als volgroeide zijderupsen door het leven gaat verdiende de Oscars immers jaren geleden al voor meesterwerken als Taxi Driver of Raging Bull. En hoewel The Departed een schitterende film is heeft deze denk ik toch niet de impact en intensiteit van die eerdere werken.

Maar we gaan hier niet verder over zeuren. Aangezien ik tijdens het Oscar weekend in Los Angeles en omstreken vertoefde, besloot ik persoonlijk hulde te brengen aan de grote filmmaker door het bekende Hollywood-sign te gaan opzoeken, die vijftien meter hoge koeieletters die op een heuvel boven Hollywood staan opgesteld en een monument van pop culture zijn geworden.

Die letters hebben een redelijk interessante geschiedenis. Opgericht in 1923, maar dan met vier extra letters die aldus ‘Hollywoodland’ vormden (vandaar de knipoog in deze recente film), diende het teken oorspronkelijk als reclame voor een lokaal vastgoedproject. Het zou slechts goed zijn voor een paar jaar, maar in de fijne traditie van het Atomium en wijlen de Ijzeren Brug in het centrum van Antwerpen werd dat heel wat langer.
In 1932 sprong actrice Peg Entwistle van de letter H naar haar dood. En nog later, in de vroege jaren veertig, vloog een dronken Albert Kothe, op dat moment de officiele ‘concierge’ van het monument, met zijn wagen uit de bocht van de zandweg boven het teken en knalde tegen diezelfde letter H aan. Kothe overleefde het maar zijn Ford T alsook de H waren ‘perte total’.

De nieuwste emanatie van het teken kwam er in 1978, toen het versleten origineel, alsof het een ouder wordende soap actrice betrof, werd vervangen. Onder de lokale sponsors van het nieuwe symbool waren onder meer Hugh Hefner en Alice Cooper.

Wij besloten ons trail run-gewijs te begeven tot het beroemde symbool, vertrekkende beneden in Griffith Park. Een behoorlijke klim die ik niet gaarne in de hitte van de zomer zou willen nadoen. Nadere inspectie van het teken vereiste enig rappelleerwerk, waarvan hieronder de vruchten…

P.S. Ik was van plan dit een paar weken geleden te posten, maar werd enigszins opgehouden, verschoning hiervoor!

The second edition of the Tour of California, bringing a fine crop of professional cyclists to the Golden State, has been ongoing for a couple of days now. The arrival of today’s stage was in downtown San Jose and featured the grueling Sierra road climb, its summit being about 20 miles before the finish line.

A nice occasion for me to check out the race and attempt some photos - I posted a report on my MTBGuru blog but I’m happy to repeat it here.

I parked in downtown San Jose, took the bike out of the car and had a simple plan: ride to Sierra Road, watch the race and shoot pics, then quickly ride back to downtown in order to witness the finish and shoot some more pics.

I rode to the base of Sierra, and positioned myself at one of the first real steep sections - going farther up would have made it a bit hard to make it back in time for the finish, so I settled with this spot.

There was a pretty large breakaway early on in the race and here’s the group arriving at the base of Sierra. On the right you can recognize Jens Voigt and Jason McCartney, a luitenant of race leader/yellow jersey Levi Leipheimer.

McCartney was charging hard on the brutal steeps of Sierra Road. Some Belgian pride in the breakaway group as well: on the right photo, in the center, is Jurgen Van De Walle, who would end up conquering the King of the Mountain jersey.

The peloton, not too far behind, was led by George Hincapie, working for team mate and leader Leipheimer (in the yellow, on Hincapie’s left).

There was no time to feel bad about missing the action higher up the mountain, I now needed to jump on my bike and ride back after the last riders had passed by. Dodging motorcycles, cops and pedestrians I ended up in a little group of fellow spectator/riders that zoomed through the streets of San Jose towards the finish line. We ended up on the actual course of which we rode the last 5 miles or so and I must admit riding through streets lined with cheering spectators was a blast. Moreover, as I crossed the actual finish line, I somehow ended up in some backstage area behind the finish. Probably a security hole of sorts but I wasn’t going to complain as I could get some decent shots from here.

Rain clouds were packing together above the hills but it remained dry and sunny in the city. The finish was near the new and rather spectacular Richard Meier designed San Jose City Hall.

Turned out Levi had stirred up things significantly on the Sierra climb and had joined the breakaway - the yellow jersey would be sprinting for the stage victory against Jens Voigt and Chris Horner, the only ones remaining from the early breakaway - the peloton was following closely.

But Jens Voigt had saved some energy and just blasted away from the other two in the final straight:

Leipheimer fought hard for the stage but won’t be too disappointed as he keeps the yellow. Horner is third, and Dutchman Robert Gesink took fourth place, just ahead of the peloton.

The podium: Voigt the stage winner, Levi the yellow jersey, Van de Walle King of the Mountain (not sure about the green and white jerseys, the results haven’t been posted yet on the official site).

Final note: some people were really serious about their photography…

Een van de fijnste fietstochtjes die een mens kan doen in San Francisco (op de weg, geen mountain bike), en ik kan het eenieder aanraden, toerist of habituee: wacht een dag af zonder fog (zeer belangrijk), start vanaf het Presidio, fiets de Brug over (de Golden Gate uiteraard), neem vervolgens de weg naar links op de heuvel richting oude bunkers en fort Baker, geniet van de fantastische uitzichten, daal vervolgens af en neem Bunker Road richting Sausalito.

Vervolgens kan je bijvoorbeeld lunchen op het terras in Cafe Trieste, wat rondpalaveren nabij de jachthaven van Sausalito, met nog meer fantastische vergezichten op San Francisco en de Bay, en daarna terugrijden naar de Brug om opnieuw in de stad te geraken. Er komt wat klimmen bij kijken maar niets al te overweldigend. Hieronder het MTBGuru kaartje:

The Mavericks Contest 2007 hasn’t happened yet and it’s getting late in the season. The likelihood of big waves is decreasing. Last week the ocean was all peaceful and calm and Mavericks’ rocks and cliffs - aka the ‘Boneyard’- were bathing in the California winter sun…

The great weather is good news for the spectators of another event coming up very soon: it’s countdown time for the second Tour of California cycling race!

Nog wat tech-nieuws, om het af te leren:

D-Wave Systems heeft gisteren in het Computer History Museum in Mountain View een demo gegeven van hun product ‘Orion’ alsook aangekondigd dat deze volgend jaar op de markt zal gegooid worden. En wat dan nog, hoor ik u denken, maar besef dat Orion zowaar een quantum computer is! En ik vind het redelijk ongelooflijk dat je volgend jaar zoiets gaat kunnen kopen - als D-Wave de beloftes waar kan maken, wat allesbehalve zeker is (hier meer details).
Goed, er is wat cryogene machinerie bij nodig en het hele geval is nogal uit de kluiten gewassen voor een luttele 16 qubits, maar toch: een commercieel verkrijgbare quantum computer! Nu nog de flux-capacitor uitvinden en misschien kan aan een teletijdmachine gewerkt worden…

A prize of USD 25 million (EUR19.2 million) is on offer to any individual or group able to come up with a commercially viable system for the removal of greenhouses gases.

Launched on 9 February by Sir Richard Branson, Head of UK Virgin Group, the Virgin Earth Challenge will initially run for five years. It will aim to encourage scientists from around the world to compete to find a solution to remove at least 1 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year from the Earth’s atmosphere.

Entries should ‘demonstrate a commercially viable design which will result in the net removal of anthropogenic, atmospheric greenhouse gases each year for at least 10 years without countervailing harmful effects. This removal must have long term effects and contribute materially to the stability of the Earth’s climate,’ reads a press release from the Virgin Group

Hmm, let’s see if I can come up with something…

How about building humongous platforms (like oil rigs) in the ocean that suck up large quantities of air and compress it to huge pressures, such that the air liquifies and its components, among which carbon dioxide, can be distilled out - then add pressurized ocean water to the liquified CO2 such that solid carbon dioxide hydrates are formed which can be stored or dumped to the ocean floor.
The problem is you’ll probably need a small nuclear plant on the platform to power all the machinery needed for this, at least if you want to do it in a net CO2 negative way…

Fijn: PARC en Powerset zijn de laatste dagen volop in het nieuws. Het moet van Lernout&Hauspie geleden zijn dat er nog zoveel hype en gebakken lucht verkocht werd in verband met natural language technologie (zij het dan niet toegepast op spraak maar op input tekst voor search engines).

De hype mag dan wel redelijke potsierlijke proporties aan het aannemen zijn, de technologie is echt - PARC is er al jaren op aan het werken en heeft een hele portfolio aan patenten in het domein. Of het gaat lukken voor Powerset, de search startup die zogezegd de troon van Google ambieert, is een ander paar mouwen. Mogelijk zijn ze eerder als flip meat voor Google’s concurrenten te beschouwen…

Voor alle duidelijkheid: ik heb absoluut niks te maken met de natural language groep op PARC ;).

Fantastische dag, afgelopen zondag - zonnig, rond de 20 graden. Ideaal om rond te toeren in het geweldige Henry Coe state park, alwaar we Mount Wilson hebben bedwongen, zie de MTBGuru trip hieronder voor meer foto’s etc. Komende dagen worden evenwel bakken regen verwacht, wat dan weer betekent dat het skiseizoen in de Sierra’s eindelijk eens een degelijke aanvang kan nemen…

Zei ik reeds dat er horden reunies op stapel staan?

De nieuwste oogst:
Smashing Pumpkins, Rage Against the Machine en The Jesus and Mary Chain - deze laatste twee in het kader van het Coachella festival, een meerdaags festival in een klein stadje in de Zuidcalifornische woestijn ter hoogte van Palm Springs - een cactus-versie van Pukkelpop zowat. Het fantastische Kyuss en dus ook Queens of the Stone Age komen overigens uit dit gebied.

Laat ik beginnen met de JaMC: eind jaren tachtig en begin jaren negentig was ik hier absoluut verslingerd aan - nog steeds beschouw ik ‘Psychocandy’ als een van de meest grensverleggende ‘rock’ platen ooit - sterker nog, ik zou gewag durven maken van een heuse ‘paradigm shift’ die deze opname heeft veroorzaakt! Jim en William Reid plaveiden de lawaaierige wegen die de Pixies, Nirvana en co verder insloegen. Nietsontziende noise (ach, die stofzuigersound!), beukende riffs en toch heel mooie melodieen - voor zij die het willen horen althans. Het gebroederte Reid bleek zich voorts nogal onuitstaanbaar te gedragen - toen ze tenslotte ook elkaar het bloed onder de nagels hadden gepest, leek het lot van de JaMC bezegeld. Maar de familievete blijkt nu dus (enigszins) bijgelegd. Als ik in Coachella geraak zal het voor hen zijn.

Rage dan. Een van de meer ongenietbare muziekgenres is ongetwijfeld rap metal. Wat is er namelijk nog vervelender dan een onuitstaanbare rapper? Juist, een onuitstaanbare rapper begeleid door een batterij bematraste gitaristen die hun best doen om nog meer herrie te produceren dan hun frontman. Maar ondanks de handicap van in dit genre te opereren, slaagden Rage Against the Machine er in 1992 op grootse wijze in een tijdloos meesterwerk te produceren en dit met de impact van een tactische atoombom. Het titelloze debuutalbum ontplofte namelijk van de energie, de opzwepende riffs en pure, woeste kwaadheid en verontwaardiging. Het deed er mij niet echt toe waarom ze zo kwaad waren en klonken, ze waren dat op magistrale wijze.

Tenslotte de Pumpkins. Eerste twee platen, Gish en Siamese Dream: briljant. Vroege concerten (Pukkelpop etc): formidastisch. Ik was er bijzonder onder de indruk van; ze speelden uitermate goed, met muziek die vaak stukken complexer is dan ze op het eerste gehoor lijkt. Na verloop van tijd bleek Billy Corgan’s stemtechniek zich echter meer en meer te reduceren tot het uitstoten van horten nasaal gehinnik (zat hij aan slechte, stembandslopende drugs?), de platen werden minder goed, bombastischer en ik haakte dan ook af. Komt met de reunie hopelijk een herbronning? ‘Reunie’ blijkt evenwel een licht overstatement: het ziet er naar uit dat enkel Corgan en drummer Chamberlain samen zullen optrekken…

Marc Herremans, a Belgian triathlete who became paralyzed below the chest after a terrible bike accident in 2002, was chosen as ‘Athlete of the Year’ 2006 by the magazine Inside Triathlon (the photo below shows the cover of the January 2007 issue).

He’s an absolutely amazing guy: the past year he won the Iron Man in Hawaii in the wheelchair athlete category and besides doing a hundred thousand other things he also attempted to climb the Nose of El Capitan in Yosemite with a team of friends - as he didn’t make it to the top the first time, he plans to try again this year. Check out his website for all the other stuff he’s doing.

Btw, triathlon is heel populair hier in de Bay Area, en Inside Triathlon ligt nogal prominent in de schappen bij de sportmagazines, waardoor het mijn aandacht getrokken had…

(btw, one ‘Calorie’ in common English equals in fact 1 kcal, or 1000 ‘calories’ in the scientific meaning of the word - see also small calories versus large calories. I shudder to think about the confusion this undoubtedly must have been creating over the years.)

Tijdens de kerstvakantie in Belgie ben ik nog eens ‘my old stomping grounds’ gaan opzoeken - de bossen van Oud-Heverlee en het Meerdael-woud, alwaar ik indertijd ben beginnen mountainbiken. Uiteraard was ik gewapend met GPS en camera teneinde fatsoenlijk materiaal voor MTBGuru te genereren; interessant te zien dat het totaal hoogteverschil van de twee lussen van het Bloso parcours toch zo’n 1600 voet bedraagt - beter dan ik verwacht had, de heuvels zijn er toch meer dan wat molshopen. Ondanks de koude en de mist, een erg fijne trip.

Net zoals vorig jaar is het stralend zonnig in de stad, zij het enigszins aan de frisse kant, wanneer ik Macworld Expo aandoe. Herinner u: in de winter is het in San Francisco gewoonlijk beter weer dan in de zomer. Ik had de indruk dat het een stuk drukker dan vorige keer was, hoewel dat ook van dag tot dag kan verschillen - het is nu Dag 2, een jaar geleden was ik er denk ik Dag 3. En dit keer loop ik rond met een MTBGuru-badge ;)!

Eerste vaststelling: er staan niet zoveel computers - vorig jaar werden hele batterijen verse Intel Mac’s (in het bijzonder de MacBook Pro) opgesteld en kon het publiek daarmee voluit prutsen. De ‘Computer’ is niet voor niks uit ‘Apple Inc’s naam gekieperd.

Dit jaar is er natuurlijk maar 1 ster op de show:

Er was letterlijk ook maar 1 exemplaar van de iPhone te bezichtigen, ronddraaiend in een soort glazen bokaal. Hierboven gezien van opzij - dun! En hieronder een vooraanzicht (verschoning voor de schabouwelijke foto):

Voor meer details waren we aangewezen op demo’s en presentaties. Ik ga hier niet herhalen wat elders reeds helemaal uit de doeken wordt gedaan en bediscussieerd, maar gewoon dit hier tonen:

Het ding ziet er, zowel in de demo’s als in het echt, zeer begeerlijk uit. Wat mij betreft is het voornaamste nadeel dat er geen GPS ingebouwd zit - ik was mij al aan het inbeelden zo’n ding op het stuur van mijn mountain bike te hebben en dan real time tracking en displaying in Google Earth te doen - gesteld dat de videochip van de iPhone dat zou aankunnen en je GE kan installeren - een andere vraag is natuurlijk of ik met een spul van $500 OTH wil riskeren (nuja, fancy carbon componenten kunnen dat ook kosten en mensen steken dat ook op hun fiets).

E-mailen - naast Yahoo mail wordt POP, IMAP ondersteund dus eigenlijk alles - de vraag is hoe vlot het typen via het hieronder gedemode touch keyboard zal verlopen (onscherpe foto, ik weet het, maar het was er een heksenketel).

De rest van de Expo dan: heel veel booths, een nerveus makende drukte en teveel om op te noemen, hoewel niks echt schokkends; de Apple TV, waarin ik niet bijster geinteresseerd ben.

Google - Earth en Sketchup voornamelijk - met een redelijk uit de kluiten gewassen booth, zeker vergeleken met de grappige micro-booth vorig jaar:

Garmin had er ook eentje, naar aanleiding van de release van de OS X versie van Training Center - nu nog Mapsource en we zijn (enigszins) tevreden:

Alle grote foto-, video-, printer-bedrijven waren present, waaronder ook moedertje Xerox. Als afsluiter deze fijne collectie onderwater cases van Canon, geshowcased in een echte visbak:

Volgend jaar meer van dat - tovert Steve Jobs dan eens wat GPS-dingen uit zijn mouwen?

Frank Taylor from Google Earth Blog showcasing the pretty amazing 3D rendering of downtown Denver in Google Earth; this is probably related to the recent release of a new update of Sketchup (version 6) which Google wants to show off, and which is still my favorite drawing program - I’m not exactly using it to create 3D buildings, but rather to illustrate/visualize all our great inventions here at PARC ;). We bought the Pro version about a year ago and I’m pleased that the update with its new features is free - the regular version is free by default of course. (Interesting, while I’m writing this, the site seems down.)

Have the massive snow storms of past weeks in Denver and Boulder (headquarters of Sketchup) perhaps improved productivity? If you’re stuck in the house, what else can you do but coding?

Somewhat strange: did Google perhaps feel they spent enough after the acquisition, so there wasn’t room for some extra servers?

De triomfantelijke terugkeer van Helden uit de Eighties! Of is het eerder: heren op respectabele leeftijd met ouderdomskwaaltjes die zich nog eens jong willen voelen en tegelijk hieraan iets willen proberen verdienen?

Het maakt niet uit; wegens te jong voor de echte versie waren The Police indertijd mijn Beatles, en je mag zeggen wat je wil over Sting, indertijd stonden diens geweldige stem, zijn aanstekelijke baslijntjes, de briljante rhytm guitar van Andy Summers en vooral het hypernerveuze getik van drummend genie Stewart Copeland garant voor de beste platen en concerten van de late seventies en vroege eighties.

Nu nog durf ik stukken Regatta de Blanc, Zenyatta Mondatta en vooral Synchronicity op de iPod spelen of in de CD speler van mijn Subaru steken, en steeds klinkt het schitterend.

Het is niet de eerste keer dat reunie-geruchten de kop opsteken.
Dus: doen ze het nu of doen ze het niet?

Ik hou wel van Nieuwjaarsdagen - zeker als ze zoals vandaag hier in de Bay Area zijn: alles stil (cfr U2), werk-zorgen zijn nog veraf, de goede voornemens nog vers en ongeschonden, door jet-lag om half zeven ’s morgens de zonsopgang mogen meemaken en buiten begroet worden door een fantastisch blauwe en heldere hemel…

Om het nieuwe jaar gepast in te zetten straks een mtb ritje maken (misschien Kennedy?) met R en haar nieuwe speelgoed (zie foto) - dat gaat dan ineens de ‘maiden voyage’ worden van haar naar Julie Furtado genoemde Santa Cruz bike.

Even een fast forward van Kerst naar Nieuwjaar - de afgelopen dagen geen tijd gehad om hier iets zinvols te melden, maar nu heb ik die wel. Sterker nog, ik zit op het vliegtuig naar San Francisco de drie laatste uren van een elf uur durende vlucht te verteren en om de slopende verveling tegen te gaan heb ik besloten om hier met mijn laptop en benen in een knoop gekneld tussen twee vliegtuigzetels … een eindejaarslijstje te plegen! (jawel, met Ecto, mijn off- en online editor).

Beste films die ik gezien heb:
- The Descent: nog eens een echt goede horrorfilm, waar is de tijd! Met in de hoofdrol een stel voornamelijk Britse dames op speleologische excursie, gezelschap gehouden door een hoop gedrochtelijke mensaapachtigen waartegen Gollem een omhooggevallen poedel lijkt.

- The Proposition: fenomenale Australische film op een scenario van Nick Cave (!), uitermate brutaal en enigszins zwaarmoedig maar bijzonder pakkend en fan-tas-tische fotografie - alsook acteerwerk.

- Casino Royale: Daniel Craig is niet een nieuwe Sean Connery, wel de nieuwe Steve McQueen! Die mens pakt fantastisch goed op het grote scherm, in hoedanigheid van Echte Vent.

- The Departed: Grand Cru Scorsese en onderhoudend gangstermaffia-gedoe, met een geweldige cast waarin vooral Marky Mark Wahlberg de show steelt.

- Borat: beste om te lachen (?). Het is nu wachten op “Bruno: the movie”.

Ook goedgekeurd: The Prestige, Babel, The Fountain, en waarschijnlijk zullen een hoop andere films die ik niet gezien heb ook wel de moeite geweest zijn.

Memorabel concert:
- dEUS in San Francisco, omdat het uitermate fijn was ze in uitstekende vorm in een piepklein halfvol zaaltje bezig te zien
- verder eigenlijk niet al veel gezien - Pearl Jam in slechte akoestische omstandigheden, een aantal goeie klassieke concerten (Joshua Bell)

Beste CD:
Ik moet toegeven dat ik amper nog CD’s koop - voor mijn muziek fix luister ik naar 105.3 en af en toe steek ik wel wat iTunes (onder meer de ganse Pocket Revolution van dEUS). Het zelden kopen van CD’s is een beetje een accidental boycot - die ik soms doorbreek, recent nog door het jammerlijke failliet van Tower Records, waardoor alles daar in de uitverkoop terecht geraakte. Daardoor heb ik voor een appel en een ei me een hele hoop ouwe klassiekers kunnen aanschaffen, waarvan Ocean Rain van Echo & the Bunnymen mij het meest beviel: hoogdravend en barok, lyrisch en meeslepend! Beste ’single’ van het jaar: Steady as she goes van The Raconteurs. Waarom? Het eenmaal horen en het fantastisch vinden, en het na 100 keer nog niet beu zijn.

Beste TV-programma:
- ik heb dit jaar denk ik enkel afleveringen van Nip/Tuck, Sex and the City, Battlestar Galactica en wat coverage van de Tour de California, Tour de France en Wereldbeker Voetbal op tv bekeken en daarvan was Battlestar Galactica veruit het meest onderhoudende (het offensief van Landis in de Tour de dag na zijn inzinking was ook fijn maar smaakt nu een beetje zuur)

En tot slot, mijn meest memorabele (mtb) trips:
- Durango 100: een hels en slopend modder, regen, donder, bliksem en hagel-fest op grote hoogte, maar o zo tevreden dat ik het uitgereden heb.
- California Death Ride met R en F, het feit dat we het alle drie uitgereden hebben
- Geweldige solo ondernemingen in Coe (Pacheco Falls) en Tahoe (Punisher Loop)
- Verder zeer fijne trips in Annadel, Auburn en Moab

Volgend jaar hopelijk nog veel meer van dat, uiteraard te volgen op MTBGuru.com! Verder wensen wij elkeen een gelukkig nieuw jaar, en dat eenieder succesvol zijn dromen mag najagen.
