Californication

Cali-op-haar-best: eind oktober, en het is al een paar weken schitterend weer, zo met een peilloos diepblauwe hemel, felle zon, 25 graden op de middag, weinig of geen smog en dus scherpe vergezichten, ’s nachts wel wat afkoelen, bijna geen fog in San Francisco, nog geen sneeuw in de Sierra’s en dus nog heel goed mountainbike-baar, weliswaar enkele bosbranden hier en daar, prima moto-weer, uitstekende condities voor brunch-luilakkerij op het terras van Cafe Borrone’s en consoorten.
Maar dat kan snel veranderen, het is nu bijna Halloween en de eerste stevige winterstorm (nuja, als je een beetje waaien en een paar dagen regen zo mag noemen) kan er elk moment aankomen.

It had gotten time for another trip to the desert lands of slickrock, canyons and mesas so last weekend we headed to Fruita and Moab. Fly into Salt Lake, drive late at night to the southeast, get to Fruita in the morning, ride bikes, drive to Moab, ride bikes the next day, then head back to the Mormon capital – such was our schedule.

Unexpected was the behaviour of the weather gods on saturday – the forecast said 20% chance of precipitation, to consist of light showers, but it turned out to be raining a la Belgique for almost 100% of the day. That didn’t stop us from riding the great trails of Fruita, but it made us pause once and a while to clear our drivetrains from a particularly vile type of sticky mud; on rented bikes, luckily.

Moab that evening: it was pouring down as hard as ever. The drive through Castle Valley had still been gorgeous though – Castle Valley may be like a little known sibling of Monument Valley, but it’s at least as grandiose. In Moab, the 24 hours of Moab was going on – the weather conditions had turned it into a challenge of biblical proportions. Read more here about flash floods, mud streams and hypothermic riders.

We woke up the next morning to a gorgeous day though, and took on Amasa Back and later part of the Slickrock trail, as always an essential and almost ceremonial thing to do here. My photos are posted here for further testimony of Fruita / Moab bliss…

Een kort berichtje om te melden dat de Ayatola alsook ondergetekende de trip naar Fruita en Moab goed verteerd hebben. Wat hebben we daar uitgespookt? Cfr. foto:

Ah, het Slickrock-trail… hoewel het merendeel van onze excursies elders plaatsvond kan een mens bijna niet anders dan pseudo-ceremonieel een stukje van het Slickrock-trail doen telkens hij in Moab is. Het is voorwaar fantastisch.

De Yankees (tot wie ik mezelf toch een beetje mag rekenen) hebben voorlopig nog steeds een volledige strike in zicht: alle exacte wetenschappen + economie zover. Straf daarbij is dat de laureaat in de scheikunde, Roger Kornberg, zelf de zoon is van een Nobelprijs winnaar – wat evenwel niet uniek is, er waren vijf andere vader-zoon winnaarsparen voor hem, volgens Wikipedia althans.

Tijd dus voor Hugo om daar een stokje voor te steken – hij wordt deze keer volstrekt over het hoofd gezien in het rijtje kanshebbers in de pers, maar dat dient eigenlijk eerder als een positief teken gezien worden. Duimen voor Hugo!

Op weg naar het werk passeer ik het hoofdkwartier van HP op Hanover Street nabij Page Mill road, en vorige week werd mijn commute bijna dagelijks opgefleurd door dit soort taferelen:

Meer tech-soap opera vermaak zal binnenkort ongetwijfeld van de blogs en nieuwskolommen druipen, wanneer de autobiografie van la Fiorina uitkomt…

The Day Fire, one of the largest forest fires ever in California, is finally 100% contained. This news comes as the first rains of the season arrived, something that will obviously help control other fires. Being without rain for so long is something that still can baffle me – Belgium seems like one big swampy wetland compared to this place (or, I could also say, California looks like one big arid dryland compared to Belgium). Those first rains consisted of some shy showers and in fact are coming a bit early – wednesday there’s some more wetness in the forecast, but after that we should move back to all-out sunny CA weather.
A few years ago I traveled by motorcycle through the area where the Day Fire was raging (Ojai) and I remember in particular the excellent Highway 33, a truly canyon fever inducing piece of road-constructional art that I thoroughly enjoyed carving through, see the photo below; it may not be looking so green there now for a while…
