Californication

Omdat het niet altijd Mount Whitney moet zijn: we hebben gisteren in perfecte omstandigheden (verse sneeuw, zon) een langlauftocht ondernomen nabij het hoogste punt van België, de Signal de Botrange, temidden de Hoge Venen, oftewel les Hautes Fagnes.

Het was koud, maar een goed soort koud: de laagstaande winterzon zorgde voor enige warmte en voor fantastisch licht (in de fotografische zin van het woord).

Ik ben behoorlijk opgetogen dat ik tijdens mijn verblijf hier grotendeels gespaard blijf van de gebruikelijke grijze tristesse - en in de plaats deze schilderachtige wintertoestanden aangeboden krijg,

die gepast gevierd worden met een blonde Leffe van ‘t vat.

Na vijf dagen in het vaderland treden er bij mij enige ontwenningsverschijnselen op.

Bah:

• Straathoeken zonder Starbuck’s / Peet’s Coffee’s / WiFi Cafe’s?
• Verkeerslichten zonder sensoren en zinloos wachten voor het nachtelijke rood
• Winkels dicht op het moment dat je ze nodig hebt
• Ultra-trage obers

Mmh:

• Jenever en Gluhwein op straat voor alleman!
• Chocolade, bier, moeder’s keuken, wild
• Besneeuwde straten en het typisch Vlaamse concept ‘gezelligheid’
• Langlaufen en lang … in de Ardennen

Last weekend the San Jose Motorcycle show was taking place (it moved from last year’s San Mateo’s Expo to the convention center in downtown San Jose). The Ayatola and yours truly were present, in order to do some poses on their favorite vehicles:

Jawel, ik heb bij mij thuis ook een kerstboom geinstalleerd; een micro-kerstboom weliswaar… (niet ongepast gezien mijn beroepsbezigheden en bovendien heel handig bij het vervoeren)

Ik word stikjaloers als ik dit allemaal lees. Jaloers omdat ik hier ondanks de elfentachtig kanalen op de kabel nog steeds geen snooker te zien kan krijgen. Tijd voor nog eens wat gedram over snooker, inderdaad.
Voor het onwaarschijnlijke geval er lokale Comcast-afgevaardigen meelezen:

De finale van het net afgelopen UK Championship was immers van een fenomenaal kaliber; om te beginnen getuigde de samenstelling ervan van een grenzeloze ongelooflijkheid: bij wijze van spektakulaire comeback stond namelijk Steve ‘The Nugget’ Davis, ultra-tacticus uit vervlogen tijden alsook typisch Britse droogkomiek, tegenover de zowat 30-jaar jongere Ding Junhui, het nieuwste snooker-wonderkind, uit Shanghai. De 18-jarige Ding wist uiteindelijk met heroisch safety-spel The Nugget te vloeren, zoals hier te lezen is.

De kerstmachine draait momenteel op volle toeren: de ‘malls’ zijn overvol, vele huizen zijn gedrapeerd in kerstversiering - een aantal straten in Palo Alto (nabij Embarcadero) houden wat dat betreft een jarenlange traditie hoog en zijn een attractie op zich, er zijn hier en daar Kerstmarkten (in Europese stijl, doch helaas zonder Gluhwein), bijvoorbeeld in downtown San Jose, zangkoren groeperen zich op publieke plaatsen en geven de welbekende klassiekers ten beste, en her en der cateren sparren-farms de kerstboom-lievende massa’s.
De grootste kerstboom die ik tot nu heb bezichtigd bevond zich in Sacramento, maar die op Union Square in San Francisco (zie hieronder) was ook niet mis. En het zou hier Californie niet zijn moest vlak naast de kerstboom geen uit de kluiten gewassen palmboom geposteerd staan…

Enkele weken geleden had ik Podcast-gewijs de eenmalige nieuwe aflevering van het Leugenpaleis op mijn iPod gezwierd, teneinde de lange autorit richting Vegas en Phoenix op te fleuren.
Dit lukte wonderwel en al spoedig maakte de ergernis omwille van het ellendige Thanksgiving-verkeer in de East Bay plaats voor nostalgisch geschater om de fratsen van Clement, Joe Roxy, Cas Goossens, Dr. De Reiger en co. Ik had de Ayatola de link beloofd, en met enige vertraging is die hier dus… dank u vriendelijk, Studio Brussel!

So all this sunny winter weather allows you to walk around outside in t-shirt (well, it does get a bit chilly in the late afternoon) and, for instance, go on sweet mountain bike rides. It’s been a while since we did Montara mountain (which is located somewhere between Half Moon Bay and Pacifica, near the ocean). I remembered awesome views of the ocean and rather interesting sections of trail near the summit. What I didn’t seem to recall as well was the long and brutal climb required to haul one’s ass up there:

Thomas is giving it all here, and as you know with photos like this, reality is much, much steeper than it seems.

The area near the summit did indeed feature some interesting and rather hair-raising sections. We bailed on the trickiest parts but took on a steep little surprise that we survived well - and subsequently had a nice and safe rollercoaster-run down.

December so far has seen vintage California conditions: blue skies and sun! You can tell it’s winter though since it gets dark sooner. On the photo: the Pacific and the coast of El Granada at the north tip of Half Moon Bay - Mavericks is just off the rocky outcrop left of center.

Due to mainly this blog post and others that sprung off from it, it is now getting increasingly improbable to find a sit-down spot at my favorite Cafe Coupa at regular hours. Grmbl! Those laptop-toting nerds squatting all over the place are getting on my nerves - I’m of course quite guilty of the same, but at least I order something once and a while.
Since the redeeming quality of the cafe is really this: the coffee and espresso are absolutely blissful. This is attested by a fascinating book that I’m currently reading (on which I want to write something soon) and that talks a bit about Coupa’s sister-cafe in Caracas, Cafe Arabica - which most likely isn’t going to get flooded by Silicon Valley geeks or bloggers any time soon. Getting a cappuccino in Coupa is now having an almost sacral quality to me; they also have a very interesting spicy hot chocolate - and R’s favorite, the vanilla chai latte.

The event started in Folsom, now a quiet suburb northeast of the state capital (with a famous prison).
R was running, I was a tourist for the day and shuttled her to the start line at a most ungodly hour. At the time (just before dawn), it was (almost) freezing:

It turned out to be a beautiful, sunny but chilly day.

It was a nicely organized event, R did great and I had fun cycling around and taking pictures.

Sketchup is een fantastisch CAD/tekenpakket - het heeft niet de ambitie een echt CAD tool a la Autocad te zijn, maar eerder een hulpmiddel voor het creeren van visualisaties / ‘artist renderings’ - ideaal voor de huis-, tuin- en keuken-uitvinder, alsook voor auteurs van patenten of wetenschappelijke artikels.
Ik ben niet van plan hier aan ‘product placement’ te gaan doen, maar als het goed is mag het ook eens gezegd worden.
Plus, ze hebben een originele en gratis methode om het pakket te evalueren, er is een OS-X alsook Windows-versie, en daarbovenop bevat het een Ruby API die toelaat Ruby scripts te runnen - good karma!
