Californication

Met een jaar vertraging heb ik ‘Any way the wind blows’ van Tom Barman bekeken: ik heb namelijk in Belgie de DVD gekocht en mee over de plas genomen.
‘Tom Barman brengt rock’n roll in de Vlaamse film’ is de kop die ik onthouden had uit een Standaard artikel van vorig jaar. En het is niet enkel rock die Barman erin gestoken heeft: ook aanstekelijke jazz, techno en breakbeat alsook het prachtige ‘Elle et moi’ van Max Berlin - de soundtrack is gewoon fantastisch. De film ademt op sublieme wijze sfeer uit: die van een zwoele zomerdag in Antwerpen, van een uit de hand lopende fuif, van ontreddering en ontroering. Er zijn onvergetelijke scenes: Firmin die in slow motion achter zijn secretaresse aanloopt op de Meir; het duo Gentenaars op de loop in de stad: de ene voor de flikken, de andere achter een meisje op straat, op de tonen van Queens of the Stone Age. Voortreffelijk is ook de ongewone ‘naturel’ in de dialogen, redelijk uniek voor een Vlaamse film. Niettemin vond ik de tweede helft van de film serieus inzakken, onder het gewicht van teveel half-uitgewerkte personages en geforceerde verhaallijnen.

Ayatola Hombre heeft mij gevraagd aandachtig dit artikel (pdf) van de Elliot Wave theoretici te lezen en mijn feedback hierop te geven. Laat ik even kort het artikel samenvatten: de auteurs stellen eerst dat de meerste personen/investeerders er een lineair denken op nahouden, gebeurtenissen uit het verleden extrapolerend om aldus in te schatten hoe de toekomst eruit gaat zien. Dit noemen ze redeneren gebaseerd op ‘physics’ (een grove reduktie, aangezien de fysica allesbehalve louter lineaire effekten beschrijft, maar goed). Daarna geven ze een rits voorbeelden van hoe de beurskoersen in een recent verleden volledig afweken van zo’n lineair actie-reactie mechanisme (bv: 9/11 is niet echt te onderscheiden op een uitgezoomde grafiek van de Dow Jones index - in tegenstelling tot wat je intuitief zou verwachten). Vervolgens wordt dan wat redelijk pedante commentaar gespuid en nog een aantal bijkomende voorbeelden en vragen gesteld; het eind van ‘part 1′ - ‘part 2′ wordt aangekondigd voor de volgende nieuwsbrief. Omdat het redelijk breedvoerig gaat worden, zal ik mijn commentaar geven in deze extended entry. Ik ben niet bepaald een beursfreak maar om een of andere reden krijgen ze mij met die Elliot-pipo’s altijd op mijn paard…

Update: heb op vraag van Ayatollah Hombre het artikel verwijderd wegens (c) redenen. Nochtans stond in de smallprint iets in de aard van ‘feel free to quote and review’ vermeld - de hele pdf citeren is misschien een wat overdreven interpretatie van het citaatrecht en daarom dus maar zelfcensuur toegepast…

Ik zit momenteel in de cleanroom te bloggen, wachtend tot een fotoresist softbake gedaan is - leve het Internet! Enfin, ik wou hier even terugkomen op mijn vlucht naar San Francisco met KLM - deze was namelijk qua service de beste die ik heb mogen meemaken in tijden. Ik moet het mijn noorderburen/Kaaslanders aangeven - in tegenstelling tot de Belgen, met het miserabele Sabena-debacle in gedachten, zijn zij er wel in geslaagd een gedegen luchtvaartmaatschappij uit te bouwen (of is deze misschien enkel leefbaar door de Air France merger?). Mijn vliegtuig was Chichen-Iza genaamd (de Azteekse stad?) - ieder had een display op de zetel voor zich met daarop toegang tot een schitterend on-demand video/movie/games systeem; de movie database bevatte minstens een dertigtal films. Te bekijken wanneer je wil, geen probleem om even te pauzeren en te zappen naar flight tracking info etc. Ik heb ‘Phileine zegt sorry’ bekeken, naar een boek van Ronald Giphart - wat rommelig en pseudo-beeldenstormerig maar met amusante momenten - en met een goede Kim Van Kooten, die de neurotisch-aandoenlijke uber-bitch van Giphart prachtig vertolkte. LOTR 3 daarna. En een groot deel van een andere Hollandse film, ‘Cloaca’ geheten (ja, zo’n vlucht duurt wel een tijd). De KLM ‘flight attendants’ waren er geregeld met drankjes en zelfs ijsjes. De enige domper op al deze vliegvreugde was het feit dat op de zetel naast mij een behoorlijk zwaarlijvig mens gezeten was.
Na de landing bleek mijn bagage onmiddellijk terecht en was ik op de vriendelijkste INS-agent op de planeet gebotst - het ‘interview’ bestond grotendeels uit een ontspannen babbel over motorcycle roads in California. Kortom, ik mag stellen dat de vlucht van de Chichen-Iza over de hele lijn een succes was.

Ben behouden terug aangekomen in Palo Alto; nadat ik de jetlag verteerd heb plan ik een hoop materiaal, foto’s en konsoorten te posten - Morregen dus!

Ben maandag (namiddag) goed en wel in Belgie gearriveerd. Dinsdagochtend om 6 uur opgestaan teneinde mij tijdig in Brussel aan de US ambassade te kunnen presenteren - een ietwat overdreven inderdaad, maar ik heb hierdoor een goede ochtendwandeling doorheen Brussel op mijn actief kunnen brengen. Lunch met Natalie op het dak van het muziekinstrumenten museum (nabij Kunstberg, en een Victor Horta-gebouw); gorgeous uitzicht over de Stad in de aanwezigheid van sprankelend gezelschap, goede spijzen en drank; niet te versmaden. En het is mooi weer! Gisteren dan: een mtb tocht met mijn pa nabij de Kluisberg. Mijn fiets heeft de vliegrit goed doorstaan - er waren enkel een paar uit de kluiten gewassen krassen op de case - maar de bike zelf is onaangeroerd. Straks: terug naar Brussel en de ambassade…

…so no time to post anything here. Though I have some nice pics from my trip last week to the Carrizo plain. Anyway, today I managed to put my bike in the air cargo case that I bought; see how that will work…

The wandering Palo Alto mountain lion - aka a Puma at Large (only Olve-alumni will understand this one) - has found its end by the hand of the Palo Alto police department. This particular mountain lion must have been mentally challenged, or extremely lazy, since rather than preying on deer or rabbits in the vast Santa Cruz mountains and the land surrounding it, he was spotted yesterday in downtown Palo Alto (Embarcadero and Middlefield for those who are curious)! Perhaps small pets and dogs or little children looked more attractive or an easier kill to the big cat? I lean towards the mental issue theory, since apparently a geriatric dog had chased it into a tree. The Palo Alto police force, eager of getting a break from their parking enforcement and dog poop ticket routine, arrived on the scene and promptly shot the poor cougar. The officers were probably drawing lots to determine who could be the one pull the trigger. Yes, in Palo Alto the world problems sometimes seem far away…

Since I started about it in the previous post: the festival of Cannes, started a few days ago, features ‘The Motorcycle diaries’, a movie about the bike trip Che Guevara made with Alberto Granada through South-America, that I will absolutely have to see! I own the books, but haven’t gotten too far in them yet. Che is played by upcoming Latin star Gael Garcia Bernal (of ‘Y tu mama tambien’ and ‘Amores perros’ fame).

Eindelijk! Ik heb de Joshua Tree foto’s gepost gekregen. Ik wou er eerst een soort Anton Corbijn-geinspireerd art project van maken maar heb mij gelukkig enigszins weten in te houden en een en ander tijdig af te handelen.

I gave away my last Gmail invite so no need to send me any more requests. The winner turned out to be not someone I know, but is a friend/co-worker of a friend (yes, a case of the loathed ‘friend-of-a-friend’ syndrome) I had given another Gmail invite to. And he did present me with the most compelling argument I’ve received: he was suffering intolerable pain due to the continuous bragging and uber-geek elitism displayed by the other guy (who happens to be his office mate).
So to all the other strangers who applied: better luck next time, but congrats with finding me (no way I could have had a high Pagerank with the original post).
Update: it seems Feedster was instrumental in finding it (at least for the runner-up in my little contest).

Completely missed it; snooker is unknown and unloved here in the US, even my well-educated American coworkers are unaware of its existence. This doesn’t take away the fact that it’s the greatest game, one of the few things I would be willing to stay home and watch TV for. I’m so longing for the days of the thundering baritone of Ted Lowe on the BBC, in all his theatrical brilliance. The second best extra-curricular thing about snooker (after Ted’s commentary) are the nicknames of the players. Hurricane Higgins, Jimmy ‘the Whirlwind’ White (Lowe: “The Wind is bloowwing agaaainn!”), Steve ‘the Nugget’ Davis, James ‘Thaifoon’ Wattana, the Maltese Falcon, etc etc.
So Ronnie ‘the Rocket’ O’Sullivan won the title this year. Good; he’s my second choice, after the perennial Jimmy White of course, who’ll most likely never make it.
O’Sullivan is also a worthy successor of Alex Higgins. I do prefer his earlier nickname though, ‘the Essex Exocet’.

Wonderful! Given the current situation and the surreal allegories our Fearless Leader has generated on more than one occasion, it may actually take a while before you notice it is… not what is seems it is. Thanks Tom for the link.

Ik heb twee invites voor een Gmail-account, u weet wel, de experimentele Google e-mail service met 1 GB free diskspace. Eentje ervan heb ik aan Ayatollah Hombre geschonken, aangezien hij toch de grootvizier van ‘all things Internet’ is en aangezien zijn urban hipster imago absoluut vereist dat hij zo’n account heeft. Nu stelt zich de vraag: wat doe ik met de tweede invite? Ik zou hem op Ebay kunnen verkopen, waar ze voor zo’n 30 a 40 dollar over de toonbank gaan, maar dit zou een laaghartige kapitulatie voor een perverse vorm van kapitalisme betekenen. Zodus heb ik besloten hem hier aan te bieden. Stuur mij een e-mail met een gefundeerd betoog waarom u de account zou willen; ik verzamel de kandidaturen en selekteer een gelukkige winnaar! Denk eraan, met een Gmail account bent u onmetelijk cyber-cool en zal u aanbeden worden door busladingen geek-groupies!

A mountain lion is wandering around in my backyard… no kidding! Twice it has attacked a horse; the second time right on the hill nearby PARC. Should I interpret this as an incentive for temporary suspension of mountain bike activity in nearby Arastradero park?

Weinig recente entries, wegens te druk bezig met rondtoeren. Nadat ik vorige week erin geslaagd was het voorwiel van mijn Ducati te demonteren teneinde de band te vervangen, en het opnieuw op min of meer correcte wijze te installeren, ben ik vrijdag vlak na de ‘bedrijfspicnic’ die we die dag hielden halsoverkop met de moto richting LA vertrokken; aldaar zou ik Tom ontmoeten om een weekendje rond te hangen in onder meer Joshua Tree National Park - in de volksmond ook wel het ‘park der Jos-bomen’. Het werd een uitermate geslaagde trip, en we zijn zonder al te veel brokken ook veilig terug thuis geraakt. Meer daarover later, als ik de foto’s post, maar bij deze alvast een teaser: mijn ‘bed ‘ nabij onze kampeerplaats (voor de gelegenheid, en in de geest van U2, in stijlvol sepia)…

Vorige zondag was ik even langs het werk gegaan en besloot van de gelegenheid gebruik te maken om naar de top van de Coyote Hill te hiken. Coyote Hill intrigeert mij al een hele tijd: het is natuurlijk gewoon de heuvel aan de overkant van de straat (’Coyote Hill Road’, jawel), maar het interessante is dat hij helemaal afgespannen is met prikkeldraad, op een paar poorten (die op slot zijn) na. Er staan doorgaans een hoop paarden te grazen, af en toe zie je er ruiters. Coyotes heb ik er nog niet gezien, slangen wel (onlangs nog een grote ‘gopher snake’). Volgens mij was de top van de heuvel een geschikte plaats om een kunstzinnige foto van PARC te nemen - ik moest dus wel eerst over de hekken klauteren, maar dat bleek geen probleem. Ik was echter geen vijf minuten aan het rondlopen op de glooiende weiden achter de draad of een hoop ruiters hadden mij al in het vizier - ik vreesde het ergste, want in de US lachen ze niet met ‘trespassing’, maar gelukkig bleken het vriendelijke ruiters. De foto’s dan - helaas bleken deze danig tegen te vallen: PARC was gedeeltelijk aan het zicht onttrokken door een hoop hinderlijke struikgewassen en tot overmaat van ramp raakte mijn lens vuil waardoor de helft van de foto’s in het water vielen. Het onderstaande moet dan maar volstaan (het gebouw dichtst bij de weg, min of meer op de voorgrond, is PARC - daarachter, Palo Alto - Silicon Valley)…

All results have been published on the Sea Otter site - here’s my race. In the Pro class, Filip Meirhaeghe won both the XC and the overall (they were doing three other stages, a time trial, a ’super XC’ and a short track race).
Meanwhile, I’ve been starting a scientific study of road rash medication and supplies. Since I had three large areas of impact on me, I’m simultaneously evaluating the different products on the market and compare the progress they induce. The picture shows the assortment under scrutiny, currently sitting on my kitchen table. One preliminary conclusion is that the 2nd Skin Moist Burn Pads are highly superior as wound dressing; on the second place we have the Johnson&Johnson Adaptic petroleum jelly coated dressings. The only drawback of the Moist Burn Pads is that they’re a little small. And as an analgesic, some Advil with a shot of tequila usually does the job!

I was planning on going to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts festival to see ao the Pixies (I’ve been talking about their reunion for a while), but it turns out tickets are sold out. You can still get some on Ebay, but for like $300 a piece - goddamn ticket scalpers. I haven’t been very pro-active on this, since many weeks ago I was looking at the site and almost bought tickets but then for some unknown reason procrastinated; bummer.
Fortunately it turns out that two Pixies-concerts have been scheduled in Berkeley in september. I have learned my lesson and just got the tickets!

It was all very exciting: at the start of my race, even though just an amateur race, I was feeling this great rush of adrenaline and that’s one reason why many probably do these races. Sprinting up the steep ‘corkscrew’ of Laguna Seca right after the start I was actually in a pretty good position, within the first ten or so. A guy next to me got entangled with the rider in front of him and smacked into the asphalt - too bad, going down before even hitting the first dirt.
I was getting a little carried away due to my early succes - I sprinted up the first singletrack climb to improve my position even more - however, what goes up must go down… on one of the early technical downhill sections I lost it: carried too much speed and braked too late on an inappropriate spot and there I went, flying over the handlebars. Got myself together and after a quick inspection confirming that all bones were intact I kept going. But half of the field had passed by then and so I had to struggle back. My downhill confidence wasn’t very inspired by the early crash so I was passed by many during the descents (amazing how fast some do go down) - but I smoked a lot of them on the climbs. A lot of congestion on the singletrack and sandy sections so I was losing lots of time. I could make some up during the second half of the race, with lots of climbing. Powering up the steeps and smoking four-five guys at a time has some gratifying feeling to it! At the end of the race my road rash plagued left arm and side started playing up so I was happy to see myself cross the finish line (see pic). The screams and yells of the audience were great and quite motivating. Then it was time for some hurt and suffering in the ER tent - they did a pretty decent job though in fixing me up, so I could enjoy later on a picnic with my friends (wine, cheese and champagne!). Even had a brief chat with Filip Meirhaeghe who showed up at the Specialized booth; here are more pics and stories about our Sea Otter adventures.

So what do I conclude out of this whole racing thing?
I signed up because of the ’something you have to try at least once’ aspect of it; it’s not for everyone, I didn’t particularly like the congestion on the singletrack, the risks you’re pressurized in taking on the downhills (no body armour) - saw lots of crashes or guys lying in ditches off the trail, the dreaded road rash I have to sit through now (as a side note: after seeing these Northshore freeride guys I have to agree we’re all wussies!). But the competition aspect of it has also its attractive sides. And for some unexplainable reason I think I quite like racing up gruesome technical steeps. I ended 25th out of about 150 - not too bad, but still room for improvement. Do it again? Maybe.
At least if my car decides to start working again so I can drive to the venue - it died on me in the late afternoon yesterday, near the parking lot of the pharmacy in Monterey I visited. So I had to call AAA to drive me home (and tow the car) - ‘AAA plus’ is your friend.

I’ve been screwing around with a comment service (externally hosted, since I have no cgi or other scripting with my current account) and it should work now. So this is a call to my readership (most likely consisting of my mother and the occasional lost Hombre) to try and use the comment link underneath the posts and speak out!

MTB World Champion and fellow Belgian Filip Meirhaeghe is going to show up at the Sea Otter! Since the Pro/Elite race starts at 1pm, and I should have finished my race long before, I’ll be there to cheer him (if I find time away from the bike manufacturers booths).
So how have I been preparing the past week? Well, I’ve been spending quite some time on ‘race-ifying’ my bike (see pic): replaced brake cables, derailleur cables and housing, put on a new chain, shaved off some excess weight, cleaned the crap out of it, and so forth. It is amazing but now it actually feels much faster; I’ve used my recently acquired motorcycle-maintenance experiences to good extent. Then, of course, I did a lot of riding. Last weekend saturday in Purisima (did the awesome Whittemore Gulch), and sunday at Skegg’s Point together with the MTBSH-crew. Skegg’s was fabulous as usual, however I did feel some lactic acid building up during the day, especially during my climbing attempts of the steep sections of the Giant Salamander. So I took it easy for some days, until today: I just finished a ride up Alpine Road in Palo Alto, through Russian Ridge and back to the car. The climb felt easy (and that has been quite different in the past), and the Alpine Road downhill is one of my favorites: it has a great rythm to it, it feels exactly like skiing a perfect run - and there is a fun technical section in the middle. So I should be more or less ready - on a less positive note, after a month of beautiful weather, the forecast says it might rain during the weekend!

Daarom is het tijd voor een prentje met daarop enige Hombre-emanaties, gegenereerd door de MMS ge-enablede telefoon van onze Secretaris-Generaal (dit is eigenlijk een overname van mijn berichtje op de Los Hombres nieuws site):

Voor zij die nog niet helemaal overtuigd zijn dat George W. Bush een volslagen bosmongool is, gelieve de transscript van zijn perskonferentie gisteren te raadplegen - registratie vereist, maar de beste bits zijn ook hassle-free op kwc.org te vinden. Negeer de toespraak in het begin (die een dik kwartier duurde), en zap rechtstreeks naar de vragen van de journalisten en Bush’s antwoorden hierop. Hallucinant. Als de Leider van de Vrije Wereld zijn lesje niet kan opzeggen, vervalt hij ofwel in herhalingen van steeds dezelfde one- of two-liners, ofwel bralt hij onsamenhangende nonsens uit. In vergelijking hiermee is onze gouverneur, Arnold Schwarzenegger, een wonder van welsprekendheid. Merk op dat Bush blijkbaar wel een zeker besef heeft van zijn minkukeligheid en confrontaties met de pers waarop hij zich niet volledig kan voorbereiden mijdt als de pest: het is pas de vierde echte perskonferentie in zijn hele ambtsperiode (Clinton en diens voorgangers hielden er tientallen) - zoals gemeld op NPR.

Er valt van Pasen hier in Californie doorgaans niet veel te merken. Om te beginnen valt er geen vrije dag - geen Goede Vrijdag of Paasmaandag - te versieren; bakkers doen niet veel moeite om chocolade paaseieren of soortgelijke delicatessen te produceren. Er vliegen geen paasklokken in het rond; zelfs van religieuze events of vieringen is niet veel sprake (en zeker geen ge-method-acteerde kruisingingen als in de Filippijnen - hoewel, we hebben wel Mel Gibson’s vehikel in de bioscopen). Het enige teken van leven in deze paas-woestijn waren de Easter-bunnies die we afgelopen zaterdag te San Francisco in een bar ergens in Japantown hebben opgemerkt - maar toegegeven, deze waren zeer de moeite!

I’ve been known to drool over motorcycles, however, currently I’m lusting after the Yeti 575 - a beautiful, lightweight, large travel (5.75 inches - nomen est omen) mountain bike. Yeti is a high quality boutique brand of frames and bikes, known from their racing involvement and legacy (a bit like Ducati ;]). So since I’m racing next week, it’s not inappropriate to want a Yeti. I’ll be relying there on my faithful Giant NRS though. The Yeti would make a great ‘trailbike’: perfect for technical singletrack, long epic rides, trips to Downieville, Mammoth, Moab or Durango!

I had bought a ticket for a Nirvana concert in Brussels late April or May, I don’t remember. But there wasn’t going to be a concert - that became soon obvious (after the Rome incident). So today I’m playing some songs on my PC and I do remember very well why I was so blown away when I heard them first. The intensity, raw energy, scorching guitar riffs, at times angelic and furious vocals and melodies, the incredible drums by Grohl formed a rare combination in rock or pop music that was to be cherised. I never expected them to become more successful (in a commercial sense) than, say, the Pixies, so I was quite surprised to see my college mates at the time (most of whom didn’t think much of my musical preferences - a mutual feeling btw) stagedive on ‘Nevermind’ several months later. ‘Bleach’ and ‘Nevermind’ were the soundtrack of a significant part of our lives (does that make us Generation X?), therefore a tribute is in place on this sad anniversary - I’m currently doing my part by playing ‘Lithium’ and ‘Lounge Act’ on Anne’s guitar.

Briek Schotte’s laatste dag, Museeuw’s laatste Ronde en Wesemann die wint. Hier viel er niet veel van te merken maar aangezien koersen (wielertoerist-gewijs) in Silicon Valley vreemd genoeg heel populair is valt er in de Palo Alto Bicycles shop in University Avenue wel wat footage te krijgen - sommige wedstrijden worden er uitgezonden (satelliet of digitale kabel) en na een paar weken of maanden zijn DVD’s te koop met de live-verslaggeving van de klassiekers.

The second reason has been elaborated by Robert M. Pirsig. On a motorcycle the freeway feels to me at the same time boring and dangerous - no curves to take, speeds are high, no room for error, lots of cages all over the place. The twisty country road in the hills is the antithese of the freeway from a moto-perspective and trying to go fast on those is great fun (and usually, but not always, less dangerous). I’m sharing this since I’m currently drooling over some BMW’s which are ideal backroad material: the Dakar, a good looking and performing dual sport, and Lars’s friend’s R100GS which will be for sale soon (has a lot of miles though).

Another Sea Otter training session this morning. My average speed was about 17.6 km/h (11 mph) - this includes screwing around trying to locate the start and finish and a short but slow detour - when I was following the wrong trail, a sandy and steep section close to the Waterfall (check the pic that I included of this unclimbable piece of trail). Riding time was 1h27min for 16 miles; 2 less than the race course, the difference I believe is the lap on the Laguna Seca Raceway that we have to do in the beginning and partly at the end; this should be a fast section so the average should improve. And there needs to be some improvement - my goal is making 19 km/h (I’d rather get 20 km/h but that seems to get unreasonably hard to achieve). Saving a bit more energy for the last two serious climbs (a technical one and a fire road grinder) would be helpful since there a significant difference can be made.

Last friday and saturday I was on the road again, with my faithful Monster. I initially only had vague plans to do some trip south, but it was Lars who convinced me to join him friday afternoon - I ended up doing something like a tour of Central Coastal California; posted lots of pics and a trip report here.

If you feel motorcycling isn’t dangerous enough: how about riding your bike through the Chernobyl area? This lady does it and has taken some amazing pictures of the deserted land and ghost towns around there. One great advantage: there are no cars, pedestrians, stoplights or cops in your way…

Ok, the movie is called ‘Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind’ and when my friend proposed me to go see it, I immediately raised multiple red flags: it has a preposterously bombastic title, it features Jim Carrey, it is directed by a music video director. But the screenplay is by Charlie Kaufman, and ‘Being John Malkovich’ and ‘Adaptation’ are credentials that cannot be ignored. We went to see it, and I now concede that the movie is a beautiful, entertaining and at times hilarious piece of art, that Carrey does some great acting and that the director pulled off a great feat - a movie that is truly original and that has the ability to surprise is so rare that it needs to be cherished. It has the typical bittersweet Kaufman absurdity all over it and that’s all I’m gonna say about it - check it out for yourself!

It’s time to tell you about Julie Delpy: she long has been sort of an obsession for both Walter and me - she personifies to me Botticelli-sculpted beauty and grace, sincerity and good taste; many of her movies are interesting, off-the-beaten-path type flics - think ‘Blanc’, ‘Killing Zoe’, ‘Before Sunrise’ (the latter two being my all-time Delpy favorites). I assume she doesn’t get (or seek) a lot of attention in Hollywood anymore; she’s been doing smaller movies and at some point she was sporting guest appearances in ‘E.R.’ But now a sequel to ‘Before Sunrise’ has been made, named - you guessed it - ‘Before Sunset’. The movie has already been shown on some festivals and apparently got rave reviews.
Even more remarkable is the fact that Julie also has started a career as singer-songwriter - usually actresses-turned-singers give rise to even more awful debacles than singers-turned-actresses, but Julie is clearly an exception: I did not resist the temptation, bought the CD and conclude that I quite like a number of songs on it - some of the lyrics are on the verge of the naive or sentimental, but overall, I’m impressed!

We couldn’t let all this gorgeous spring weather pass by without going on a serious motorcycle ride. And so we did get a group together last saturday, and hit the road. We did a ride around the East Bay: 680 to Livermore, then over a narrow, bumpy, bad ass potholed twister known as Morgan Territory Road towards Mount Diablo, then back along Telsa road to Livermore; after a lunch break, onto the magnificent Mines Road towards the summit of Mount Hamilton and the Lick observatory, then back to San Jose. My Americo-Chinese-Austrio-German ride buddies - and yours truly pointing out the twisties.

Heb mij ingeschreven voor de Sea Otter Classic, een jaarlijkse mountainbike race nabij Monterey, midden april. Het betreft eigenlijk veel meer dan een race, het is een vierdaags mtb-festival, met tientallen disciplines en tal van events. Een en ander heeft tot gevolg dat ik
- als een idioot ben beginnen trainen
- danig op mijn voeding zit te letten
- lig te berekenen hoeveel gewicht ik nog kan besparen door te prutsen aan mijn fiets.
Ik ben ingeschreven voor de cross-country race, 18 mijl lang met een hoogteverschil van 2400 ft (zo’n 700m). Vorige week ben ik het parcours gaan verkennen, dat geheel op het domein Fort Ord ligt, een voormalig militair domein. En het is prachtig! Endless singletrack, maar dan wel van een snel en niet zeer technisch kaliber; door het feit dat de start op het hoogste punt ligt en we dus beginnen met afdalen, zal de race initieel zeer gegroepeerd en hektisch zijn - ik verkies eerder een stevige klim in het begin om het veld wat uit te dunnen, maar goed. Er is een hele dierentuin aan kategorieen, die elk op een verschillend tijdstip starten, dus hopelijk valt het nogal mee met de omvang van het peleton.
Overigens zou ik geen rechtmatige Silicon Valley geek zijn moest ik geen GPS data hebben genomen - door te klikken op het verkleinde kaartje hieronder krijg je de data te zien.

Het is weer die tijd van het jaar: gedurende maart, april en mei staat California in bloei. Op sommige plaatsen, zoals in de woestijnen in het zuidoosten (Mojave en Death Valley) kan dit een zeer kortstondig maar uiterst spektakulair gebeuren zijn, en is een juiste timing van het grootste belang. Op andere plaatsen, langs de kusten, de Central Valley of de Bay Area, is er wat meer respijt. Maar op zonnige dagen is Californie gedurende deze weken op haar mooist. Er is zelfs een soort toeristische industrie rond ontstaan (een beetje zoals de ‘fall colors’ tours aan de oostkust) - wildflower watchers weten u te melden wanneer en waar de hot spots zijn: dit zijn een aantal websites om volgen.
Bij deze wens ik ook mijn fotografisch steentje bij te dragen: op onderstaande foto ziet u de eerste ‘poppies’ (Eschscholzia californica, een papaver-achtige, tevens de ’state flower’ van Californie) die ik opgemerkt heb in Arastradero Preserve, een park vlakbij mijn werkplaats waar ik gaarne pleeg te fietsen en rondhangen.

Het moet het seizoen der reunies zijn: na de Pixies, is er nu ook een reunie van Ze Noiz aangekondigd. Ik heb doorgaans nogal bedenkingen bij reunies, maar Ze Noiz…! Ik kan er niet van over; Ze Noiz was eind jaren tachtig ongehoord fantastisch; de verschroeiende gitaar van Zaman in combinatie met een Frontman zoals Vlaanderen er in het pre-Barman of -Mauro tijdperk nog maar weinig gezien had - Bart ‘Rico’ Vandenbossche, de laaglandse Nick Cave - maakten een diepe indruk op mij. Ik herinner me als zeventienjarige de woeste Zaman-riffs proberen staan naspelen terwijl ik hun ‘Thy Will Be Done’ vinylplaat op had staan - ik was bijzonder verzot op de geweldige sound die Zaman uit zijn versterker wist te halen (effekten? buizenversterker?). Vandenbossche doe niet mee met de reunie - mijn enthousiasme is hierdoor enigszins bekoeld, maar er is zowaar ook een website, waarop hun beste nummers gratis als mp3 te downloaden zijn. Allen daarheen! Een ding is zeker: heden galmen ‘Tattoo Chile’ and ‘She’s allright’ uit mijn raam overheen het nachtelijke Palo Alto!

George Pake was the first director, basically the founder, of PARC (it was his idea to locate the place in Palo Alto) - he passed away last week. Interesting reading on how PARC got started is ‘Dealers of lightning’ by Michael Hiltzig - containing lots of fun anecdotes, including the one describing the reaction of Pake when he first laid eyes on an article in Rolling Stone (a ‘druggie magazine’ according to Pake’s secretary at the time) depicting some spaced-out researchers at work (or rather, at play) in PARC. I never really met Pake but have seen him a couple of times during some events (i.e. the big PARC-alumni party last year, celebrating 30 years of Ethernet). He’ll be remembered!

Het is stralend, >20 graden, de ‘endless’ Californische zomer lijkt aangebroken! Uitstekend motoweer dus, en vandaar dat ik zondag een uitgebreid tochtje over het Peninsula en in de North Bay heb gedaan. Daarbij legde ik een bezoek af aan Ducati Marin, de beste Ducati-dealer in de Bay Area wat mij betreft. Ik hoopte op een glimp van en misschien zelfs een testrit op de adembenemend prachtige 749 Dark (foto), maar ze waren helaas allen reeds de deur uit. De gewone 749 is ook niet mis maar er stond geen demo-model klaar voor een testrit - volgende keer meer geluk.
San Francisco was zonovergoten en schitterde - over de Golden Gate brug rijden zorgde voor een heerlijk vakantie-gevoel. Honderden zeilboten in de baai, de groene heuvels van de Marin Headlands, de diepblauwe Pacific, de felle kleuren van de Victoriaanse huizen… de stad en bij uitbreiding de hele Bay Area is op heldere lentedagen als deze op zijn best; in de zomermaanden is er immers de alomtegenwoordige ‘fog’ en in de herfst ziet alles er vaak aride en dor uit.

A.Q. Khan must be the Darth Vader of nuclear proliferation. He’s of course the father of the Pakistanian A-bomb, and has confessed to be the main responsible for a whole black market in nuclear weapons material, involving Iran, North-Korea and heaven knows who else. You would except this guy to be on the war-against-terror blacklist, positioned somewhere right after Osama and Saddam. But what’s the case? After his confession, Khan received pardon from president Musharraf and regained Pakistanian folk hero status; the Dubya-administration watched and stood still in complete silence during the whole charade. At about the same time, rumours about army movements in North Pakistan against Taliban fighters and about Osama’s capture start spreading. You don’t have to be much of a conspiracy theorist to smell that’s something’s going on here; the deal might be: Khan gets off the hook, supporting the position of Musharraf, and in return, Dubya is allowed to chase Osama on Pakistan territory - capturing him would be highly convenient in an election year. I’m sharing this with you for two reasons: first, a post titled ‘the Wrath of Khan’ sounds pretty cool and second, this article in the New Yorker points out that this might be much more than a conspiracy theory, and is truly disturbing.

Went to check out Grandaddy play in the Warfield yesterday night. They were amazing though they played a very short set; a mixed bag of stuff from mainly the Sophtware Slump and Sumday. My favorite ‘The Crystal Lake’ was there as well, though I didn’t completely like the faster pace they played it at. The concert was too short, most likely due to the fact that they were sharing the bill with Saves the Day, which were entertaining for about one and a half song and after that, incredibly boring.

Deze avond heb ik televisie gekeken - iets wat ik normaal gezien zowat nooit doe, maar aangezien ik het rustig aan moest doen om de laatste resten virussen of bacillen of weet ik wat uit mijn systeem te werken, leek het mij een niet ongepast tijdverdrijf, zeker aangezien het oscaravond was en ik de gehele ceremonie op ABC met mijn antenne (heb geen kabel) kon volgen. Mijn observaties:

- Dat duurde uren en uren! Normaal gezien zou ik het amper tot de eerste commercial break volhouden, maar goed, aangezien het alternatief liggen suffen in mijn sofa was, hield ik het toch maar vol - in parallel evenwel de krant lezend en af en toe wat telefoontjes plegend.

- Sommige acceptance speeches zijn tenenkrullend - andere ontwapenend - nog andere neutraal. De tenenkrullende zijn doorgaans van het semi-tranerige type, met geacteerd lijkende emoties in protserig hypocriete Hollywood-stijl - gelukkig zaten er dit jaar zo niet al teveel bij.

- Billy Crystal is soms grappig, maar wat meer subversiviteit zou geapprecieerd worden. Per slot van rekening staat hij voor een zaal die grotendeels bevolkt wordt door opgedufte miljonairs, en die zouden best tegen een stootje moeten kunnen - en een tegengewicht tegen het alles overheersende en op mijn zenuwen werkende Eddy Wally-gevoel (”alles is gewaldig!”) zou op zijn plaats zijn.

- Adrien Brody was de grappigste (de mouthwash alvorens de ‘best actress’ award uit te reiken!), Sophia Coppola het knapst (ik ben blijkbaar een heuse crush voor haar aan het ontwikkelen) en ontwapenendst - geen traditionele schoonheid maar o zoveel meer klasse dan het peloton opgetrutte actrices rond haar - zie foto. Robin Williams maakte een grapje over de ‘freedom fries’ die eigenlijk Belgisch zijn; ik verwachtte vuurwerk van Sean Penn’s speech, maar op een enkele opmerking over de onbestaande WMD’s na hield hij het heel braaf - en ook oprecht (improviserend). Ik had compassie met Bill Murray - goeie tragikomische rollen zoals de zijne in Lost In Translation zijn zo oneindig veel moeilijker dan die typische Hollywood-huilebalk vertolkingen. En de Peter Jackson-troepen rijfden natuurlijk een recordaantal binnen - ik zou zeggen, nu is het terug tijd voor boosaardige farces a la Bad Taste of Braindead!

Have been under attack by some freak bug the last couple of days, keeping me bed-ridden. However, since today is a leap day, I feel I should post something; what about this: the Belgian disciples of the Dark Overlord of Lake Washington aren’t very pleased with this initiative of political party ‘Spirit’ (currently in the ruling government, as part of the SP-A) to promote the use of open source software in government offices and public schools in Belgium. They sent in a complaint letter, accompanied by spreading the usual FUD in the press and some pseudo-blackmail related to the ‘ten thousands of jobs’ the Evil One provides in the country. I’m always a bit puzzled why they’re so sensitive about this: this should make hardly the slightest difference to their bottom line - are they genuinely scared by the prospect of younger generations growing up using Other OS’s? Or perhaps their outrage was provoked by the fact that Spirit uses some footage from the famous ‘taart’ incident - as the land of surrealism (in both the good and the bad sense), where else than in Belgium could Bill Gates have gotten a cake thrown in the face?

Lost in translation
I already raved about the movie and the JAMC track at the end of it, so I got the soundtrack.
Reasons to love it: some nice tunes from Kevin Shields (of My Bloody Valentine), and in addition to that a song from My Bloody Valentine’s classic album ‘Loveless’; Death in Vegas, with one of their typical hypnotic tracks (’Girls’) - it seems Sophia Coppola shares with me a love for feedback immersed melancholia! The purest gem is a track by Sebastien Teller called ‘Fantino’ - acoustic guitars, strings, (analog?) synthesizers, some Asian sounds… a gorgeous masterpiece, full of beautiful tristesse. Of course, we also have ‘Just like Honey’ and, as a secret track, the hilarious Bryan Ferry impersonation by Bill Murray.
Hmmm: a number of oddities I’m not particularly fond of, filling up the gaps.

Probot
Dit is het heavy metal project van Dave Grohl. En een ding is zeker: het is niet om te lachen, Grohl meent het. Hijzelf speelde zowat alles in en stuurde de ruwe tracks naar een aantal zwaarmetalen idolen uit zijn jeugd, die hun vocals verleenden; daar zitten tradionele metal en punk-ikonen bij, maar ook heuse black metal ensembles.
Er zijn drie redenen waarom dit plaatje geweldig is: de belangrijkste heet ‘Shake your Blood’, een fantastische garage-punk riff met Lemmy van Moteurhead eroverheen reutelend - een van de beste en aanstekelijkste stukken rock’n'roll in tijden. Dan hebben we ‘Red War’ met Max Cavalera van Sepultura - een spanbetonnen doch zeer ritmische deun met die niet te imiteren oerschreeuw van brulkikker Cavalera. Tenslotte is er ‘Centuries of Sin’ met de frontman van het black metal groupuscule Venom - die zijn hilarische lyrics overheen de schuimbekkende riff giet en deze met onheilspellend gegrom en gerochel kruidt. Klinkt serieus, maar er spreekt een uitermate subtiel gevoel voor humor uit!
Op de andere nummers ben ik niet al te gesteld, hoewel Grohl nog een paar prima d(r)eunen uit de mouw schudt.

It must be a gene. Perhaps prehistoric man started riding horses in order to chase and kill his enemies, and evolution did the rest. Put a person in a car and suddenly he or she becomes a blind, ignorant, stupid, cruel and overall loathsome creature: all car drivers are morons, myself included.
Today I went to work by bicycle (you see me coming): twice almost got pushed off the road, and I survived one direct attempt on my life. It’s of course not that different from Belgium, though over there drivers are more of the vile and aggressive kind; here they’re more plain stupid and blind for all that happens in their surroundings; plus half of them have a cellphone plastered to their heads, so they’re def as well. There is something to be said about the limited visibility of bicycles, but riding around as a lighted christmas tree loses its fun after a while. And maybe I need to correct my route a bit in order to avoid most trouble spots. Anyway, I realized again one of the reasons why off-road cycling is so good; at least there you’re on top of the food chain (that is, behind the mountain lion).
