Een typisch symptoom van verregaande Californication is: groeiende intolerantie tegen regen en kou - inderdaad, een mens verwordt hier tot weer-wuss. Nu het stevig wintert in het Westen, ben ik enigzins opgelucht sinds vorige week terug over een bolide te beschikken (Subaru Outback via Craigslist). Ik zat een dikke maand zonder kooi, maar gelukkig waren de elementen genadig.
Hierbij nog een paar links om deze donkere tijden door te komen: een Economist artikel over Einstein (het is binnenkort 100 jaar geleden dat zijn eerste baanbrekend artikel werd gepubliceerd), en een gedegen verklaring over het blauw-zijn van water.

Zoals in de vorige post gezegd is de vulkaan op het Canarische eiland La Palma (Cumbre Vieja) en een eventuele uitbarsting met Atlantische tsunami tot gevolg al een hele poos oud nieuws.
Het is bekend dat de westelijke kant van de vulkaan al een hele tijd volledig afgescheurd is (via een diagonaal oplopende breuklijn), en in feite enkel door wrijving tegen het andere deel van het eiland wordt vastgehouden. Een volgende uitbarsting van de Cumbre Vieja zou het hele zootje in de oceaan kunnen doen storten, maar het zou even goed nog een aantal uitbarstingen kunnen vergen (en dus misschien tienduizenden jaren).
Interessante opmerking in dit artikel van Gwynne Dyer is hierbij dat La Palma redelijk verwaarloosd wordt wat betreft seismologische instrumentatie en monitoring (zeker in vergelijking met wat hier in Californie bijvoorbeeld de norm is, waar zowat op elke zakdoek land metingen worden gedaan); de verklaring die Dyer oppert voor de onder-instrumentatie van La Palma is: een massale evacuatie van de oostkust (New York, etc) en het Caraibische gebied op een paar uur tijd (post-eruptie) is niet haalbaar. Op voorhand evacueren op grond van seismologische/vulkanologische data en metingen die allesbehalve zekerheid gaan bieden over de omvang van het risico (vals alarm) is economische/humanitaire waanzin. Anderzijds wil niemand, geen enkele regering of beleidsmaker, een eventuele ramp en de talloze slachtoffers op zijn/haar geweten hebben. Dus in zo’n verlies-verlies scenario verkiezen ze misschien juist niet te beschikken over allerhande meetgegevens… ignorance is bliss.

A cataclysmic couple of days: the tsunami of course, cfr. the incredible footage and images circling around. I’ve long been somewhat intrigued by tsunami’s (in tempore non suspecto), because of a documentary I once saw on the possible consequences of an Isla La Palma volcanic eruption / tsunami combo (read: US east coast being pounded) and of course, I can’t help it , because ‘tsunami’ is a beautiful word.
Then, for a couple of days it looked like there was a 3% chance the world would end on April 13, 2029, courtesy of asteroid 2004 MN4, which is on a near-collision course. The impact probability, changing day by day as a result of more processed acquisition data, went up to about 1/37, but by now has gone down safely to zero (the main impact 2004 MN4 will turn out to have are the countless Bruce Willis jokes on Slashdot).
Finally (and I have to agree, rather anticlimatically), we’re currently getting torrential rains in California - things here look now much like Belgium on a stormy november or december day.

Christmas day was supposed to be the last day of 2004 we would be able to enjoy the glorious sunny weather we’ve been enjoying in the Bay Area since quite a number of weeks now; the rains were scheduled to come in on sunday, so M and I figured the right way to celebrate Christmas would be to go mountain biking. Destination: Annadel State Park, near Santa Rosa, a place I haven’t been to so far, for mysterious and unexplicable reasons since people have been raving about it.

All the rave turned out to be quite justified. Annadel is a true mtb-paradise: long and sweet stretches of singletrack with rocks and boulders all over the place to make things interesting. My favorite sections: North Burma, Cobblestone and Rough-n-Go trails (nomen est omen). On this sort of technical stuff the Yeti handles like a dream.

The typical Californian oak-dotted hills made for some nice pics - this one looks like a Lord-of-the-rings type forest, or like the forest in this Tim Burton movie with the headless horseman (Sleepy Hollow, if I’m not mistaking).
After the ride we hit the city - too lazy to cook so we found a place in the Mission where we got a vintage El Salvadorian dish…

Kerstmis in Silicon Valley is zoals elders vooral een festival van kitsch en koopwoede. Toch is het aandoenlijk te zien hoeveel moeite sommigen zich getroosten om een en ander er feestelijk te laten uitzien. In deze zijstraat van Embarcadero in Palo Alto doet men elk jaar wat extra inspanningen…

…dit jaar zijn er zelfs smurfen te zien. R kon aanvankelijk niet geloven dat de smurfen Belgisch zijn, zoals de wafels, chocolade en bier - ze groeide op met de blauwe ventjes op tv.

In downtown San Jose is er zelfs een kerstmarkt, met kerststallen, -bomen, een reuzerad en draaimolens - maar zonder gluhwein. De nachten doen momenteel zelfs een beetje hun best om echte kerst-koude aan te bieden. R en ik vinden het allemaal prima…

Bij de comments op een vorige post is aan het licht gekomen dat Konijn, van Konijn Diezijn, op deze pagina’s rondwaart. Konijn, dames en heren, was lid van allerhande demo-groepjes uit ver vervlogen mid-nineties tijden (voor zij die onbekend zijn met het fenomeen ‘demo-scene’, hier nog wat links) - en niet in het minst van de fabuleus lame Lame Coders. Ook een behoorlijk aantal prominente Hombres (waaronder uiteraard ondergetekende) bekenden zich indertijd tot het Lame-dom. Mijn voornaamste bezigheid als Lame Coder was overigens het spelen van X-Pilot tijdens demo-parties - ik kwalificeerde dan ook met glans als Lame Coder.
En nu voel ik de nostalgie in mij dus opwellen (’de tijd van toen…’)

Gisteren gaan mountainbiken in Arastradero park. Aangezien ik nog steeds Car-less in California ben (zonder auto zit), diende ik tevens van mijn appartement richting park te fietsen - het was gelukkig een zonovergoten warme decemberdag (c) California. In Arastradero werd ik opgewacht door T en I; het was al een tijdje geleden dat ik hier reed en opnieuw werd ik aangenaam herinnerd aan het feit dat er in Arastradero een uitermate entertainende lus uitgestippeld kan worden - met hopen singletrack, een klimmetje met een serie switchbacks, de ‘jumps’, het ‘reservoir’ en de afdaling op het eind: T had zijn nieuwe Nokia bij met daarin een camera en nam een paar fotootjes in het reservoir - de kwaliteit (640×480 resolutie) is behoorlijk crappy, niettemin vind ik mijn zonnestraal-foto redelijk geslaagd.

Wat ik geleerd heb uit de comments op dit artikel en Ayatola Hombre ongetwijfeld zeer zal plezieren is dat de fameuze klassieke IBM-keyboards (met toetsen die zo lekker klikken) tegenwoordig blijbaar door Fujitsu gemaakt worden (of althans Fujitsu-gelabeld worden)… misschien kan ik nu een company-discount krijgen?

Vorige week met de moto Sacramento bezocht; jawel, Sacramento - de hoofdstad van Californie en legendarisch voor haar onopvallendheid en saaiheid, de oorzaak van het feit dat ik de stad nog nooit echt degelijk heb bezocht. Maar Californication zou uiteraard niet compleet zijn zonder een gedegen studie van de hoofdstad en dus ging ik op pad, samen met F en J (BMW en Suzuki).

Het was ijselijk koud (naar Californische normen) gedurende onze rit over I-80 richting Sacramento en na een paar uur waren we wat blij dat we ter bestemming aangekomen waren. Ons doel was: the State Capitol, een soort duplicaat van het Capitol in Washington, dat de Californische regering en administratie huisvest. Na een luchthavengewijze X-ray inspectie en fouillering mochten we het Capitol binnentreden en een en ander bekijken. Helaas geraakten we niet tot in het kantoor van Arnold, en ook zijn fameuze ‘tent’, waarin hij af en toe een sigaar opsteekt, hebben we niet kunnen zien. Die tent heeft Arnie ergens op een binnenkoer opgesteld, aangezien de reglementen roken binnenskamers ten strengste verbieden, en Arnold de Governator niet zou zijn moest hij daar geen mouw aan weten te passen; in de tent heeft hij naar verluidt een soort mini-kantoortje ingericht waarin hij geregeld belangrijke besprekingen voert, onder het genot van een goede Havana (of nep-Havana, aangezien ik vermoed dat echte niet geimporteerd mogen worden).
Er was verder een kerstkoor aan het werk, en er waren wat pseudo-interessante schilderijen en een bibliotheek te bezichtigen. Veel meer hebben we niet van Sacramento te zien gekregen aangezien het weinige daglicht van deze korte decemberdagen ons noopte op te schieten. De route terug richting Bay Area verliep over highway 160, langs de dijken van de Sacramento-rivier en -delta, een minder bekend en bezocht gebied dat verdacht veel op het Scheldeland in Klein-Brabant lijkt (cfr. foto).

Op dit eigenste moment zit ik op mijn nieuwe iBook G4 laptop in Cafe Coupa te tokkelen, een verse cappuccino binnen handbereik. Ik heb bij deze dus een hoogtepunt van Silicon Valley snob-geekdom bereikt! WiFi is natuurlijk fantastisch, van het bevrijdend gevoel dat de Verlossing der Kabels schenkt, het in staat zijn ’s morgens in bed de Craiglist-ads na te pluizen op zoek naar een nieuwe bolide, tot het after-hours rondhangen in coffeeshops om pseudo-werk te verrichten.
De iBook dan. Mac OS-X is eigenlijk altijd al een no-brainer geweest: de uitstekende user interface en software van Apple, en de solide stabiliteit en flexibiliteit van een Unix (freeBSD) besturingssysteem. De straf: je lot verbinden aan een closed hardware platform - maar dan wel eentje dat werkt, zonder de noodzaak om het elfendertig keer per dag te rebooten. De beslissing een Mac te kopen was louter het gevolg van de beslissing een laptop te nemen, omdat elke laptop zowat per definitie een gesloten hardware platform is en het dus weinig uitmaakt - als desktop zou ik niet voor een Mac gegaan zijn, en ik blijf overigens bij mijn lichtelijk aftands dual-boot Win98/Linux systeem (het voordeel van Windows 98 is dat er alvast geen enerverende te installeren updates/patches meer verschijnen).
Het was ook meegenomen dat Apple eind oktober de iBook wat opkalefaterde en van de 1.2 GHz G4 processor voorzien heeft. De iBook werkt overigens fantastisch (een gigabyte RAM helpt) en het is een ongelooflijke verademing in vergelijking met het oneindige gesukkel met Windows.

PARC is in het nieuws en uiteraard wil ik bij deze ook mijn steentje bijdragen ter algemene verspreiding van deze heuglijke tijding: we hebben een eerste officiele ‘partner’ die niet Xerox heet.
Het aangekondigde project met Fujitsu betreft het commercializeren van de zogenaamde ‘Obje’ technologie waarbij devices met elkaar communiceren via een standaard platform, waarbij ze elkaar ‘onderwijzen’ welk protocol te gebruiken. Een soort meta-interface dus, die moet toelaten zonder het te hoeven van installeren van allerhande drivers een hele varieteit van zowel wired als wireless devices met elkaar te laten spreken. Enfin, dat is toch wat een simpele hardware-mens als ondergetekende ervan begrijpt.
Er zijn nog meer projecten aan de gang, maar deze bevinden zich voorlopig nog in duikboot-mode.

Het nieuwe skiseizoen is nu al een tijdje bezig (cfr onze Thanksgiving-trip) en ik wou het vaderland toch eens attent maken op het bestaan van Warren Miller. Miller is een ‘professional ski-bum’ die in de US beroemd is geworden omdat hij bij de aanvang van elke winter, nu reeds 55 jaar lang, met een nieuwe ski-film uitkomt. De films, documentaires, zitten boordevol spektakulaire ski- en snowboard-stunts op fantastische lokaties over de ganse wereld. Warren Miller (nu in de tachtig jaar oud) staat al lang synoniem voor een heel productiebedrijf, de meester zelf doet niet veel meer dan de commentaar inspreken… en veel skien. De films zijn redelijk amusant, hoewel ze eigenlijk onderling bijna inwisselbaar zijn. Een gratis liftticket voor Heavenly bij aankoop van een filmticket is ook meegenomen.

The Roman empire fell because of a fatal cocktail of arrogance, incompetence and indifference. Arrogance and incompetence result in an inability to identify problems, in a tendency to underestimate (or, dare I say, misunderestimate) challenges and threats, and the incapacity to solve them. Indifference lets those problems further fester and grow, like gangreen, or a cancer tumor, until it’s too late and the patient is lost.
The West and the United States in particular can be and is being regarded in many ways as an empire, and in my opinion an empire worth sustaining, as there doesn’t seem to be a much better alternative. The values of the Illumination, the resulting progress in science and technology, the liberties we enjoy as a result of the efforts of Voltaire, Montesquieu and countless others have given the western civilization and culture tremendous leverage. The US, even under the command of Bush and his acolytes (or should I say, Rove and his acolytes), still embodies these values, more so I think than Europe, which has become somewhat cynical and tired after a bloody and war torn century.
Arrogance and indifference are now certainly quite ubiquitous, it suffices to read about the startling statements of Donald Rumsfeld in the news today to get an idea.
It is however the third demon, Incompetence, that bothers me the most. The rise of religion, and its inverse proportionality to scientific progress is one thing. The tightening of immigration laws in the US, reducing the number of qualified engineers and scientists around, is another one. The local level of education yet another one (add some creationism and related religious crap in highschool and we can start playing in the same class as Saudi-Arabia). Competence is the only thing that will save us and keep the barbarians at the gate. Maybe India or China will be the next emperors (though I wouldn’t rule out the Republic of California), but they will do so by unleashing the power of their people’s minds, and keeping religion and other mind viruses where they belong.
I decided to do my bit and started writing an essay called ‘The Age of Incompetence’, in which I intend to structure all these favorite little topics and thoughts on the matter of mine to which you can regard this an introduction. As usual, I will wrap up things ‘morregen’…

Eenieder die over Netflix beschikt of een anderssoortig DVD-verhuurcentrum in de buurt heeft gelieve dadelijk Actie te nemen: ‘Faster‘ is een fantastische documentaire over het MotoGP-circus (voor de leken: de Formule 1 van de motoren). Bewonder bijvoorbeeld de onnavolgbare Valentino Rossi, de snelste man op twee wielen, die het ganse veld en Max Biaggio in het bijzonder te kakken zet. Of Gary McCoy (dit jaar de kleuren van mijn werkgever verdedigend, en wel in een Ducati 999), die zowat alle denkbare blessures oploopt maar toch maar blijft rijden. Tijdens het kijken vergat ik ogenblikkelijk de ellendige pijn ten gevolge van mijn daags tevoren getrokken wijsheidstand. Maar ik garandeer u, zelfs met een normaal gebit en zonder interesse in of ervaring met moto’s en andere door ontploffingsmotoren voortgedreven vehikels zult u van deze meeslepende DVD kunnen genieten.
Bijzonder in zijn nopjes is uw dienaar overigens met het feit dat MotoGP volgend jaar Californie aandoet, en wel in Laguna Seca.

Reading this article on Boing Boing fulfilled me with great pleasure, not because I would have any admiration for the spammer’s creativity, but because, as a nostalgic for old PC’s and computers, I just love ASCII art. And this ‘ASCII babe’ site is of course a beautiful exponent of the noble art.
Back in the (AT-)day, I was addicted to a Civilization-style game completely in ASCII graphics - I believe it was called ‘Empire’. Drawing pixels was too demanding then, CGA graphics were advanced and platform games cool. It inspired me to start coding my own ASCII-game, ‘Ivanhoe’. Alas, my initial excitement didn’t quite result in much. Except for the fact that I got the credentials to join the Lame Coders…

Thanksgiving is a genuinely nice US holiday - people flock together and cook and have dinner with their friends, family and loved ones, and most places - shops and restaurants - actually close early in the evening (about the only day that happens). For an ‘alien’ as myself it doesn’t bear any deeper meaning or tradition (just like ‘Sinterklaas’ on December 6 doesn’t mean anything to the locals), but of course I’m happy to rise to the occasion and adopt the local habits. But to beat the system (and the travel/traffic congestion), I had the dinner-with-friends-and-loved-ones on the wednesday night before (no turkey though but delicious tuna a la A.), and started traveling on Thanksgiving Day itself.
Destination: eastern Sierra’s. Party: Ayatola Hombre et moi. Our goal: ski/ride the crap out of Mammoth and Tahoe.
Our Thanksgiving dinner then consisted of a venison burger in Lone Pine. The weather in the Owen’s valley was magnificent on friday, the views and mountains gorgeous, and the skiing on Mammoth Mountain was pretty decent: plenty of snow, be it of the ‘packed powder’ type, so we mainly did the groomed runs. Friday night we drove over 395 towards the Carson valley and cut over to South Lake Tahoe.

Saturday morning: a massive dump of fresh powder had fallen and was still falling out of the sky. A powder day! Heavenly was… well, heavenly, and we were happy I had upgraded our rental car to an Outback, which did great on the snow. Tree skiing (e.g. on the Skyway Glades) is one of my favorite Heavenly pastimes but we had to constrain ourselves since there wasn’t quite that much base of snow yet on the slopes, resulting in some ugly scratches on our skis/board - and some unfortunate crashes. That night we felt brave and decided to drive home over the Luther and Carson passes rather than dealing with slow traffic on highway 50. The flashing signs warning to carry chains etc seemed a good deterrent for most since almost no one else took our route (89 to 88) and we were back home in a little over 5 hours.
Sunday was chill-out day and we went whale watching in Point Reyes, where we actually did see whales. All in all, a Thanksgiving weekend to be thankful of indeed.

Craigslist offers RSS feeds of their search result pages - you can do a specific search (say, cars for sale on the SF peninsula, price between 7K and 10K) and subscribe to the RSS feed of the resulting search result page in your RSS reader of choice (in my case, bloglines). Then, you can easily keep an eye on it and quickly find out whenever new ads appear…
Yes, I am car-less for the moment. Departed from my faithful Mazda Protege, as it wasn’t behaving as faithful the past year; so it was Time for a Change…

…can be quite glorious - it was sunnier and warmer today in the city than on an average day in summer. Due to the lower temperatures of the marine layer and the resulting absence of fog, the sky and the views are crystal clear on a good day. And today was a good day. Took Il Mostro up north in the morning, over the Golden Gate to the Pacific Coast highway, up Mount Tam and then over the breathtaking Ridgecrest road and the rather obnoxiously bumpy Fairfax-Bolinas road towards the secluded town of Bolinas. Fairfax-Bolinas offered about all the possible motorcycle challenges I can imagine: a pitiful excuse for asphalt, horrid bumps and potholes, gravel, leafs, branches and other assortments of crap in the corners, deer trying to cross the road and jumping all over the place, opposing traffic that positions itself in *my* lane, and so on. But the total crap quality of the apshalt was my main source of concern and I was happy to get to Highway 1 again - time for some serious fun, as there wasn’t a lot of traffic on this stretch leading to Stinson Beach. Fifty sweeping corners later, I’m heading to Muir Beach outlook, where the views are amazing as I was expecting. All too soon I find myself on the Golden Gate Bridge again. I take it easy and ride through the city, do the fun Lombard Street downhill and go check out the Coit Tower - the city looking gorgeous underneath it.

Geen tijd momenteel om hier te posten, wegens: nakende verkoop auto, aankoop nieuw voertuig, opzetten wireless network thuis, algehele paperasserij, overwegingen om een skitrip te doen dit weekend etc. Maar, I’ll be back, net als onze Governator, with a vengeance! Om het met het onsterfelijk genie van de Belgian Asociality te stellen: “Morregen, da’k het zeker ga doen; morregen, zeker voor de noen!”

I have a bitter rivalry with Ayatola Hombre since many years; it all started somewhere in 1995 when we traveled to the US - the first visit for both of us; we drove 8000 miles and saw many places. Out of this, a contest was born: to visit as many states as possible. Today, I’m lagging far behind (fortunately the main trophees, Alaska and Hawaii, have not yet been claimed), obviously since Ayatola currently lives back east (in New York), where the areal density of states is much larger (I’m sounding like RvO here).
Anyway, I was thinking about a new, redefined challenge: to visit as many US counties as possible! I got inspired to this by the plethora of election maps and by a map posted by kwc. So I fired up Photoshop and started working (note: you need to have some time on your hand and be sufficiently bored to undertake this), and the results are shown below. Click on the pic for a high resolution version. I’ll admit there is some margin of error on this (didn’t go through the effort of double checking everything using reference maps showing proper county boundaries) but I believe the map reflects pretty well my record. My first thought when I finished this was: this country is f*kin’ big! I always believed that I was relatively well-traveled here in the US but you can see the vast voids on the map (mostly ‘fly-over country’ but anyway…). At some point I should undertake an across-the-continent ride or drive to improve the situation…

Yesterday was Mike R.’s last day at PARC - a special moment, also for me, as I got hired on his project back in the day. Three years ago we were digging for gold but found pyrite - beautiful on its own, but not gold. Now we have each our own projects. At least I now have a good excuse to plan a visit down under - no, not down the Truckee river as the picture testifies but ‘back home’ in Brisbane, Queensland.

The SF MOMA currently features an exhibit of Roy Liechtenstein’s work; went to check it out as I quite like his ‘art comics’ (or ‘comic art’?). It reminds me of the cover art of the Sonic Youth album ‘Goo’ that I discovered somewhere in the late eighties (I used to think then that was Liechtenstein art but in fact it was work by Raymond Pettibon). The massive Liechtenstein paintings with their idiosyncratic stenciled ‘dots’ are quite something.
There was also an exhibit on industrial design and the best part of that were the Ducati 996 (special ‘Senna’ version) and the classic E-type Jaguar.

Ook hier in de US is 11 november een bijzondere dag, ‘Veterans Day’, maar helaas geen vrije dag voor de meesten, waaronder ook uw dienaar. Ik las in De Standaard dat de laatste twee Belgische oudstrijders uit de ‘Groote Oorlog’ tijdens het afgelopen jaar overleden zijn (op respectievelijk 104- en 105-jarige leeftijd) - geen Little Big Man-achtige heroische verhalen meer uit eerste hand over den Duitsch en de Rode Baron en consoorten…

A good point was raised by Ayatola Hombre in his comments on my US GSP map: the GSP data (gross state product, an estimate for the value of goods and services produced in a state’s economy - I won’t go in the details of how this is calculated, check the wikipedia) isn’t necessarily correlated with the net in- or outflow of federal tax money for a given state. Not necessarily, but probably, was my belief.

So I went back to the drawing board in order to verify this and came up with data from the Tax Foundation, a nonpartisan educational organization. They base their numbers on data from the US Census Bureau and the US Bureau of Economic Analysis. The results are even more baffling than the GSP data:
Out of the 31 ‘red’ states (states that voted Bush), 26 states enjoyed a net inflow of federal tax money in 2003. Out of the 20 ‘blue’ states (states that voted Kerry), only 8 enjoyed a net inflow. Hence the total tax burden is carried by 5 red and 12 blue states, the top three being New Jersey, New Hampshire and Connecticut (all blue).

This shows again that the US may look very red on the election maps, but the economy - and wealth, and future - really is being carried by the ‘liberal’ states. Cash is flowing from blue to red, not unlike the Flanders-Wallonia situation in Belgium (an interesting paradox: Bush and the republicans play in this analogy the role of Di Rupo and the PS).
Some more info on the factors that affect the data, according to the Tax Foundation:

“Federal spending on defense and other procurement dollars are often funneled to the states of powerful Members of Congress, and state governments can grab more federal grant money by skillfully manipulating their spending to comply with federal regulations.
However, demography may be more influential than politics. States with more residents on Social Security, Medicare and other large federal entitlements are bound to rank fairly high. Similarly, the high spending levels in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia are explained by the predominance of federal employees.On the tax side of the equation, states with higher incomes per capita—New Jersey stands out—pay much higher federal taxes per capita because of the income tax’s progressive structure. The citizens in these high-income, high-tax states do not always live better or save more than people in low-income, low-tax states because the cost of living is usually that much higher.”

Nog zo iets Californisch waaraan ik wel kan wennen: zonovergoten novemberdagen.
Vandaag gaan mountainbiken in Wilder Ranch Park nabij Santa Cruz. Wilder is een van mijn favoriete lokale mtb-bestemmingen, zoniet degene waaraan ik misschien wel het meest gehecht ben, omdat het alles mee heeft: een ongelooflijke variatie aan trails en condities: open weilanden met soms brede fireroads, dan weer nauwe slingerende singletracks, korte technische afdalingen en klimmetjes, verweerde en rotsige trails, overgroeide paden in het woud, en dat alles in een fantastisch decor, met soms prachtige uitzichten op de Pacific en de Monterey Bay. Het essentiele en definierende gedeelte wat mij betreft is de combinatie Zane Gray - Wilder trail, eerst een adembenemende technische afdaling die de adrenaline vrolijk doet opspuiten, gevolgd door een rollercoaster op-en-neer singletrack (wel uitkijken voor slangen, coyotes en nietsvermoedende toeristen). Andere hoogtepunten zijn de Enchanted Loop en de vele schitterende trails in het UCSC-gedeelte.
Ik had voor de gelegenheid mijn singlespeed (kijk ma, zonder versnellingen!) nog eens bovengehaald en hoewel ik opnieuw even moest wennen aan het brutale afzien bij het klimmen, was het spoedig een en al ‘bliss’ en voelde ik me zweven boven het singletrack. Mijn door al deze heerlijkheden geinduceerde zen-trance werd enkel onderbroken door een hoogst lullige crash op het eind, vlakbij de parking, toen ik nog effe voor de laatste keer snel door de bocht wilde scheuren, maar plots moest remmen voor tegenliggers - helaas op een strook zand waardoor mijn voorwiel blokkeerde. Gelukkig had ik mijn sweater aan en mijn Dainese short waardoor de schade nogal beperkt bleef - mijn in de Sea Otter reeds geplaagde elleboog bleek het pijnlijkst getroffen - en het voorval kon deze mooie dag niet verknoeien.

Had some time to kill last week and I had this idea for another election map, so I started gathering data. The idea was to combine the well-known purple map with GDP (gross domestic product) data per state (aka GSP). This is the result:

The GSP data are shown in units of 1E9 (a million times a thousand) dollars. They are 2001 estimates from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (US department of Commerce). I also looked at the GSP data pro capita; states where Kerry won the electoral college (blue states) have an average GSP pro capita of $38301 (averaged over these states), the states where Bush won the college (red states) $31597. Furthermore, blue states generate 54% of the total GDP of the US and red states 46%.
So the red states may be much more numerous than the blue but they generate a disproportionate amount of the US wealth. Ironically, red states - favoring Bush hence tax cuts - benefit most of the US income tax (to use Belgian terms, ‘cash flows’ are flowing from blue to red). As they are also the least likely terrorist targets in the US (New York, DC and the West Coast cities being the most probable ones), there must be some truth in that ‘moral values’ were a decisive factor in the 2004 elections, rather than the economy and the war against terror. So essentially the religious zealots in the heartland got Bush in the White House, and we, poor enlightened slobs, are financially supporting them. Rove truly is a genius.

I’ve been going once and a while to Cafe Coupa in Palo Alto, to drink coffee and read stuff, and I observed an interesting phenomenon. Silicon Valley geeks aren’t particularly known for their social skills and meeting new people is never easy for them. However, a novel catalyst enabling expansion of the geek’s socal circle seems to be: free WiFi (forget social network software). Because the cafe offers free WiFi, it attracts crowds of folks with laptops and notebooks, who are studying, coding, writing or web browsing after hours - geeks. Along a sidewall of the place is a row of power outlets, and the laptop people sooner or later all hook up their adaptors there. After a while, the power chords get entangled and when people want to move or leave, they out of necessity have to interact with each other - and so many a conversation seems to get started.

Tot slot nog een observatie van mijnentwege: aangezien de republikeinen nu een comfortabele meerderheid bezitten in Congres en Senaat, de president leveren, en het opperste gerechtshof naar hun hand kunnen zetten (momenteel een redelijk geriatrisch gezelschap waarvan sommige leden tijdens de ambtstermijn van deze president waarschijnlijk aan vervanging toe zijn), gaat zowat alles wat in de komende vier jaar maar mis kan gaan, hun schuld zijn. Een win-win situatie want: ofwel zal over vier jaar Barack Obama of Hillary met een landslide de presidentsverkiezing winnen, ofwel gaat er niks mis, en dan zal ik gaarne toegeven dat Bush een uitstekende keus was.

Update: ik was de Rude Pundit even uit het oog verloren, die een hilarische reeks artikels aan het posten is, ‘The Five Stages of Grieving For George Bush’s Re-Election’ - niet voor gevoelige zielen maar voor de verandering eens een minder conventionele, zij het niet minder duidelijke, analyse…

Volgens NPR staat Kerry op het punt te ‘conceden’ - zijn verlies toe te geven. A. vroeg mij gisteren of we het nog vier jaar met die ‘chimpanzee’ moesten gaan doen en hoewel ik haar gerust wilde stellen ziet het er dus zo naar uit. Ik had gisteravond wat vroege exit poll resultaten in het voordeel van Kerry gezien, en koesterde voorbarige hoop. Het einde der illusies, a la Arnon Grunberg? In ieder geval, bij de onluisterende persona van de huidige en toekomstige president krijg ik zowaar bijna heimwee naar de presence van een Reagan of Bush Senior. Nog vier jaar - het voelt aan als het uitzitten van een gevangenisstraf. De opkomst bij de verkiezingen, ongeveer 120 miljoen, was een record in recente geschiedenis - velen meenden dat dit een nadeel zou zijn voor de republikeinen - onterecht. Mijn RSS feeds blijven eerlijk gezegd nog steeds redelijk kalm - Dan Gillmor is inktzwart in zijn analyse. Ik voelde mij deze morgen ook licht gedeprimeerd, maar eigenlijk meer omwille van de weerzinwekkende moord op Theo Van Gogh door alweer een godsdienstwaanzinnige maniak en omwille van het heengaan van de fantastische Gerrie Knetemann.
Tijdens het intikken van deze laatste regels heeft Kerry toegegeven. Dubya II is een feit en we zullen dit ‘for better or for worse’ moeten aanvaarden; maar, er blijft altijd hoop - net zoals er altijd hoop was voor de fans van de Boston Red Sox. Ik ga de nieuwe Bush beschouwen als een gelegenheid - om mij druk te maken over diens religieus fundamentalisme en zwakzinnige toespraken, als een onuitputtelijke inspiratie voor satire. En uiteindelijk bleek een Red Sox zege geen illusie.

Mijn Bloglines feeds houden zich momenteel ongelooflijk koest. Vanavond en morgen gaan ze ongetwijfeld exploderen in een maalstroom van verkiezingsnieuws, commentaar en oproer allerhande. Nu kunnen we echter eventjes genieten van de stilte in het oog van de storm…

Nog een nachtje slapen enzovoort.
Na nog eens rustig over de zaken nagedacht te hebben ben ik tot de conclusie gekomen dat mijn voornaamste bezwaar tegen Bush-de-president niet het feit is dat ik mij plaatsvervangend schaam voor zijn al dan niet gespeelde stompzinnigheid, taalonkunde en smoelentrekkerij; niet het doordrukken van diens ultra-conservatieve politieke agenda, niet zijn dubieus buitenlandse beleid, maar wel: het gegeven dat Bush en co volstrekt ongevoelig lijken voor feiten, wetenschappelijke gegevens en data, kortom voor de harde realiteit - Bush betracht integendeel voortdurend de ‘data’ aan te passen aan ideologie, aan zijn roemruchte ‘gut instinct’.
Dit manifesteert zich op velerlei gebieden (zie bijvoorbeeld de open brief van wetenschappers aan Bush, over het manipuleren van het wetenschappelijke onderzoek, de vele getuigenissen van (ex-)adviseurs en medewerkers, het boek van ex-antiterrorisme adviseur Richard Clarke, etc), maar ik ga mij hierbij beperken tot een referentie naar een uitstekende artikel van Larry Lessig; hij bespreekt een recent boek over Paul O’Neill, een ontgoochelde republikeinse ‘top policy maker’, en maakt een interessante juxtapositie van ‘idealisten’ en ‘realisten’. In een zekere perverse zin zijn Bush en co ‘idealisten’ - hun idealen zijn ‘verheven’ boven de werkelijkheid. Is het nu naief geworden te verlangen dat politici zich baseren op feiten en dossierkennis? Het alternatief, recept voor incompetentie, vind ik alvast angstaanjagend (zo ook de Economist).
Lessig stelt voor het ‘idealisme’ te heroveren en noemt zich een ‘nieuwe idealist’: ‘count me in the “idealist” camp. The sort that believes in “reality-based” policy making’.
Ondertussen ben ik dezer dagen het geweldige ‘Lies and the Lying Liars who tell them’ van Al Franken nachttafel-lektuur-gewijs tot mij aan het nemen. Franken doet hier op onnavolgbare manier waar velen zelden toe komen in het publieke debat: luisteren naar de argumenten van de tegenpartij (in zijn geval: news- en talk show hosts van rechtse signatuur alsook de voltallige Bush administration) , hun geschriften lezen en bestuderen, en ze van (ongenadige) repliek dienen. Voor de buitenstaanders: de laatste maanden zijn hier in de US tientallen boeken uitgekomen van politieke commentatoren, columnisten, pundits, politologen and the likes, van beide zijden van het politieke spectrum. Ik ben doorgaans niet zo’n fan van deze schrijfsels omdat ze ofwel nogal saai zijn, ik me er mateloos aan erger, of teveel aan ‘preaching for the converted’ gedaan wordt. Het boek van Franken is in ieder geval fantastisch onderhoudend, geestig (waarom kun je met polemisten van rechtse signatuur zowat nooit lachen?), en er wordt op wetenschappelijke wijze de vloer aangeveegd met tal van onwaarheden - Franken was tijdens het schrijven gastddocent aan Harvard, en had een team van een dozijn studenten ingeschakeld om aan research te doen.
Enfin, morgen zal (hopelijk) duidelijk worden of we Bush, Ashcroft, Rove, Perle, Cheney als ongure (en lelijke!) figuranten uit een boze nachtmerrie kunnen beginnen vergeten, dan wel of we nog een paar jaar hun grijnzende tronies zullen moeten trotseren - in het laatste geval kunnen we ons alvast troosten met het feit dat iemand als Steve Brodner een onuitputtelijke bron van inspiratie gaat blijven houden…

Principieel leuk aan religie in de VS is dat je zelfs de meest idiote godsdienst hier ongestoord kunt belijden. Hoogst onaardig daarentegen is de trend dat in het onderwijs in sommige staten wetenschap als ‘een van de mogelijke denkwijzen’ gaat gejuxtaponeerd worden tegenover religieuze leer. Ik heb het hier meer bepaald over de ongelooflijke situatie dat in sommige middelbare scholen in een aantal ‘bible belt’ staten ‘Intelligent Design’ (ID) oftewel creationisme-nieuwe-stijl als mogelijk alternatief naast de evolutieleer van Darwin gaat gedoceerd worden. Ik ga niet teveel tijd verliezen met het argumenteren waarom het nonsens is ID zelfs nog maar te durven voorstellen als theorie (het is geen wetenschappelijke theorie, er worden geen falsifieerbare stellingen geponeerd) - proponenten verwijzen steevast naar zogenaamde gebreken in Darwin’s evolutieleer, die als ‘18e eeuws’ en achterhaald wordt voorgesteld - telkens kan echter bewezen worden dat Darwin gelijk heeft; de literatuur met bewijsmateriaal is overweldigend en metersdik. Het is eigenlijk een lachwekkend idee te denken dat het debat met de ID-ers moet aangegaan worden, het is een beetje als beginnen debatteren met maanlanding-ontkenners. Niettemin is het menens daar in die middelbare scholen.
Hopelijk doen de recente artikels in National Geographic en Wired Magazine een en ander in de goede richting keren.
Tenslotte, om het met een collega vanop Slashdot te stellen:
‘I am tired of people telling me that I should have ‘an open mind’ for the possibility of the supernatural. I have an open mind. When you provide examples, collect data, create theory, test theory against data and provide statistically sound results that your theory supports the reality and when you publish your findings so that the rest of us can do the same thing on our own. Then I will accept your version of reality. Until then my mind is just that - open for a scientific process.’

Just got back from the Halloween street parade in Castro Street in San Francisco. Forgot to put a media card in my camera, so no pics this year (at least, until I get some of my friends’ cameras). This year was the second year the event was organized (as opposed to the spontaneous happening it used to be). Perhaps because of this, the crowds seemed bigger, there were more and more ‘gawkers’ and less people in actual costume, which is unfortunate. I remember clearly how great it was three years ago, how it was this big open-air party with outrageously funny people everywhere. Now the truely remarkable creations/creatures seemed rare. Suggestion by J: install gates and only let in people in costume! My costume by the way was a mountain-biker-attacked-by-mountain-lion; J was a ‘roper’ and S the Joker.

Nog twee nachten slapen en het is zover. De election frenzy is momenteel in volle gang; ik word overstelpt door allerhande campagne e-mails, op vele plaatsen op straat zijn supporters van beide kanten bezig met het uitdelen van stickers en flyers, spandoeken hangen op appartementsgebouwen (’Please, no more Bush!’). En dit is dan nog Californie, waar de campagnes hoogstens op waakvlam branden (omdat Bush hier geen kans maakt het electoral college te winnen) - een collega van mij die vorige week in Ohio was, ‘battleground state’ par excellence, vertelde dat de taferelen aldaar surrealistisch waren - op zowat elke straathoek stonden vrijwilligers campagne te voeren, stickers en affiches uit te delen, op tv was er een voortdurend bombardement van advertenties enzovoort.
Enige observaties: net zoals vier jaar geleden lijkt het een ‘dead heat’ te worden, wat ik toch zeer merkwaardig vind: hoe is het mogelijk dat in zo’n immens land de kiezers bijna exact 50%-50% verdeeld zijn?
Verder, de ‘endorsements’: belangrijke kranten en tijdschriften die in hun editorialen kamp kiezen voor een kandidaat; de New Yorker bijvoorbeeld met een vlammend en sterk onderbouwd betoog tegen Bush en voor Kerry - niet verrassend; wel verrassend is de ‘reluctant endorsement of Kerry’ van The Economist, een redelijk toonaangevend tijdschrift in financiele en ekonomische aangelegenheden dat in het verleden steevast voor de conservatieve/republikeinse kandidaat koos (Bush in 2000, Dole in 1996 etc).
Tot slot: de OBL video - de deus ex machina die Bush dat duwtje extra gaat geven? Ik hoop alvast van niet, maar onderzoek op Cornell wijst op een correlatie tussen ‘terror alerts’ en de populariteit van Bush - om het met William Gibson te zeggen: de relatie tussen OBL en Bush lijkt welhaast symbiotisch. De New York Times meent echter dat het allemaal zo’n vaart niet zal lopen en dat de kiezers zich niet zullen laten beinvloeden.
Ik vrees voor gesukkel en (onopzettelijk) geknoei met de ballots en het tellen - bijvoorbeeld met het in rekening brengen van de zogenaamde ‘provisional votes’ (nog-niet geregistreerde kiezers die kunnen stemmen alvorens zich te registreren - waardoor het even gaat duren voor hun stemmen gevalideerd kunnen worden); in het slechtste geval met een lawine van rechtszaken en legale disputen tot gevolg. Maar laten we niet teveel zeuren: even goed worden we woensdag wakker met een - hopelijk nieuwe - president.

Here you see my pathetic attempt in capturing the lunar eclipse that occurred this night (no, point-and-shoot cameras are not the right thing for this). It wasn’t entirely full anymore when it caught my eye but it looked still pretty interesting.
Even more interesting is the cool footage Cassini took of Titan and that is currently keeping scientists busy - around Christmas the Huygens probe is set to descend onto Titan’s surface, and will hopefully generate even more astronomical excitement.

It was time for another heroic weekend; we (’3 Belgen’) would fly into Vegas and had made plans:

Plan A: Climb Mount Whitney (with 14494 feet the highest point in the contiguous US).
Plan B: Descend into the Grand Canyon and hike back up
Plan C: A weekend in Sin City (’Vegas is great!’)

Plan A was jeopardized by the recent storms that had rolled into the West and covered the High Sierra’s in deep powder. This had already surprised a bunch of hikers (Californians are used to clear skies and apparently become lazy in checking forecasts). Moreover the road pass over the Panamint range in Death Valley was closed, so we couldn’t reach the trailhead easily.
Plan C was deemed a bit overly gluttonous, so (as you undoubtedly already had concluded by seeing the picture below), Plan B was executed.
The Grand Canyon is, well, quite grand: 277 miles long and almost a mile deep. We were camping on the South Rim (at about 7000 feet elevation), and enjoying night temperatures of almost -4 C (polar conditions for a spoiled Californian). On sunday, we got up really early, started hiking down the canyon on South Kaibab trail, walked along the Colorado river for a while and then climbed back up along Bright Angel trail, leading us back to the South Rim. An enterprise that took us about 8 hours and left us exhausted, but quite satisfied. And by night, we could still indulge in some Vegas excesses.

Een tijdje terug was Dan Gillmor te gast op PARC; Gillmor is een gereputeerd columnist (oa in SiliconValley.com) en journalist van de San Jose Mercury News - sectie technologie. Gillmor houdt er ook al jaren een weblog op na, en het onderwerp van zijn voordracht was nu net het ontstaan en de groei van de ‘nieuwe media’ (online publicaties, webloggers, forums) en de interactie / contrast met de ‘klassieke media’ (kranten, televisie, radio). Gillmor is een bedachtzaam maar onderhoudend spreker en hij bouwde zijn presentatie op aan de hand van talrijke persoonlijke anecdotes en ervaringen. Voorbeelden en/of trends die hij besprak:

• ‘Wiki’ based projecten, zoals wikipedia of disinfopedia zijn een interessante en zeer krachtige vorm van grootschalige collectieve online projecten die hun sterkte halen uit het ‘many eyes watching’ principe dat ook sommige open source projecten typeert, en ook gekenmerkt wordt door een organische groei. Snelle ‘fact checking’ ligt hierdoor aan de vingertoppen van elke websurfer.
• ‘Bloggers en de media’: recente voorbeelden van de invloed van weblogs en het typische sneeuwbaleffect dat deze kunnen veroorzaken zijn Rathergate en de zaak met de Kryptonite sloten. Maar dit is geen nieuw verschijnsel; enkele jaren terug werd het aftreden van Trent Lott ook al door zo’n effect in de hand gewerkt.
• Een reeks interessante anecdotes, waaronder eentje over een conferentie waarbij een spreker (toenmalige CEO van Quest) door ‘real time online fact checking’ in nauwe schoentjes werd gebracht, dit terwijl hij nog op het spreekgestoelte stond.

Deze en tal van andere voorbeelden worden verder uitgewerkt in Gillmor’s recente boek We the Media, dat interessant genoeg door O’Reilly onder een Creative Commons licentie uitgegeven wordt en gratis (in afzonderlijke chapters) te downloaden valt. En de Creative Commons licentie brengt mij natuurlijk bij
Lawrence Lessig, Professor of Law te Stanford, de grote kracht achter Creative Commons, die een paar dagen later een PARC-Forum kwam geven (wonen en werken in the Valley heeft zo zijn voordelen - er zijn horden interessante voordrachten door intellektuele reuzen bij te wonen). Lessig is de witte ridder van de Electronic Frontier Foundation en de Free Software Foundation en gespecializeerd in het ‘copyright’.
Lessig’s centrale stelling is dat de copyright wetgeving (althans in de VS) totaal onaangepast is aan de huidige werkelijkheid en technologie; in 1978 werd de copyright wet van een ‘opt-in’ systeem (een auteur/eigenaar diende zijn creatie te registreren om te kunnen genieten van copyright) omgevormd tot een ‘opt-out’ systeem (alle creaties zijn ‘by default’ beschermd); daarnaast werd de duur van de bescherming verlengd van 30 jaar tot ‘lifetime author’ + 70 jaar. Geen enkele ander vorm van intellektuele eigendom (patenten, trademark) geeft de eigenaar van het copyright zoveel rechten (zonder de minste vorm van registratie-formaliteit) en dit heeft volgens Lessig een heel aantal aberraties tot gevolg (ik ga hier niet dieper op in aangezien dit alles uitgebreid besproken wordt op Lessig’s website - het ontbreken van een sterke ‘fair use’ clausule is een voorbeeld).
Hij gaf tevens tal van voorbeelden van wat hij de ‘remix culture’ noemt en hoe die door de bestaande copyright wetgeving in gevaar gebracht wordt - 1 voorbeeldje toch: de roemruchte satirische Bush-Kerry animatievideo ‘This is my land’ van Jib Jab - de erven Woody Guthrie spanden een proces aan tegen de makers van de animatiefilm maar in deze zaak zegevierde voor een keer het gezond verstand en werd dit als een geval van ‘fair use’ bestempeld.
Lessig bleek een uitstekend en uitermate onderhoudend spreker. Als ik even tijd heb (’morregen’) zal ik ook eens een Creative Commons bannertje voor mijn site installeren…

Nu de Californische winter goed en wel is aangebroken (lees: het regent af en toe), is het tijd voor nog wat politiek nieuws.

Vooreerst, onze Governator ondersteunt een aantal opmerkelijke ‘bills’ (een soort lokaal referendum dat aan de kiezers wordt voorgelegd - politici nemen een standpunt in en trachten de kiezers te overtuigen). Prop 71 bijvoorbeeld is een voorstel om ‘embryonic stem cell research’ in Californie te ondersteunen met geld uit de Californische staatskas, dat de volle steun van Ahnuld heeft gekregen - opmerkelijk omdat dit lijnrecht ingaat tegen de politiek van Bush en de ‘Christian right’ vleugel van de Republikeinse Partij. Ahnuld wordt beschouwd als een ’social liberal’ en ‘economic conservative’ maar vandaag is hij mijn grote held waarop ik erg trots ben. Lang leve Ahnuld! Dit is een voorbeeld van het aantrekkelijke en onvoorspelbare van de Amerikaanse politiek - in tegenstelling tot bijvoorbeeld het gros van de Belgische politici zijn hun ambtgenoten hier geen ‘yes-men’ die altijd braaf de uitgestippelde partijlijn volgen (als er in Belgie dan eens iemand buiten de lijntjes kleurt wordt die langs alle kanten teruggefloten - cfr Frank Vandebroucke). Ook genietend van Governatorial steun is een plan om het Californische kust ecosysteem te beschermen - eveneens inroeiend tegen de Bush-lijn.

Verder heeft de fantastische William Gibson onlangs de draad van zijn weblog terug opgepikt, en met een missie. Ik citeer:

Met Gibson heb ik alvast een grondige afkeer gemeen van de autoritair-religieuze en antimodernistische ideologie van Bush en diens akolieten.

Tot slot, de al even geweldige Jon Stewart (die op Comedy Central een soort fake nieuws show presenteert - een beetje te vergelijken met wat Uytterhoeven soms in ‘Alles kan beter’ placht te brengen, maar dan iets bijtender) heeft voor oproer gezorgd door in CNN’s Crossfire de media coverage van het verkiezingsseizoen en van de Amerikaanse politiek in het algemeen aan de kaak te stellen en daarbij live danig de draak te steken met beide Crossfire presentatoren; de uitzending was hilarisch!

In the pars pro toto sense, where Downieville obviously refers to the incredible mountainbiking trails in and around the little town in the Sierra foothills. I’ve often had trouble in explaining to people what I believe is so great about mountainbiking, so I thought I’d give it here another try, using a stream-of-consciousness style of prose (in obligatory italic). Beware, if this doesn’t work, I will feel obliged to write a poem next time.

…imagine you’re with your bike on an elevated and exposed mountain plateau you’re more than 7000 feet high and breathing hard under a deep blue sky the sun beats down on you but you enjoy the fresh breeze as you’re riding you’re cruising down a meandering, dusty and rocky trail that gets narrower as it goes and finally snakes its way into the upper reaches of the forest, a mix of Douglas firs and some isolated birches with leaves ranging from yellow to fierce red in this autumn sun it’s getting darker now the massive branches of the pines catch most light your eyes need time to adapt you’re entering the deep entrails of the forest you’re in love with this gorgeous trail, its smooth curves, tight switchbacks, steep drops you’re floating and you feel devoid of all gravity and worries and you hope your weightlessness will last forever but the trail is a jealous and possessive lover it demands all your attention and focus any carelessness, mistake or perceived neglect is punished hard you’re getting rock steps thrown at you, ruts and roots and boulders and slippery logs it keeps getting narrower vertigo-inducing drop-offs on your side don’t look into them, keep your focus, shift your weight and feather the brakes, don’t digress and soon you’re flowing again you feel in perfect harmony with the world around you, you sense the rhythm of the trail you’re dancing a delirious tango you’re making sensual love you’re aware and sharp as a blade it gets steeper you’re going faster and faster you catch air over that rock ledge but there is the abyss and the fast flowing river thirty feet below you bounce down and squeeze the brakes hard the muscles in your fingers are burning you release the levers and lean the bike into the tight righthand corner and you continue your way it goes on and on and you don’t want to feel fatigue you don’t want your bliss to end soon it will end though and you will hit the road but you won’t feel tristesse or resentment only peace and something that must come really close to happiness…

So I went to Downieville this saturday with Thomas and Inge, my mtbsh partners in crime, on what would turn out to be the last day of the Northern Californian summer, and we took the shuttle up to Packer Saddle. The most defining parts of the ride for me, responsible for my lyrical state of mind, are the lower section of Butcher Ranch and the entire Second Divide trail. It was also the first serious test of my new Yeti 575 and boy, it did quite deliver on its promises. I never felt so at ease and flowing here as with this bike, even though I still bailed out on some of the hairiest sections. I was planning on some Tahoe riding as well on sunday, but the sudden storm front coming in overnight and the rain and snow made me decide otherwise.

Sunday I finally saw ‘The motorcycle diaries’, or ‘Diarios de motocicleta’; I had been looking forward to this movie already a while.
Was my eagerness justified? Partly. I had read most of the book, and I was hoping on an epic depiction of Guevara and Granada’s trip through the wild, stunning and magical South America that was described. My interest in the persona of Che was only secondary. The first part of the movie did quite deliver on its promise. But as Granada’s Norton (Il Poderosa!) started to falter along the way, so did in my opinion the movie. Perhaps I’m not part of the target audience - I don’t need much convincing of the injustices of the System.
But the focus on the idealism of the young Che got a bit too strong towards the end and was clearly an interpretation by the screenplay writer or director. For instance, the episode in the leper colony San Pablo is described by only a couple of paragraphs in Guevara’s diary, yet it made a big part of the movie. Some of Che’s ‘heroic’ acts in the movie (his crossing of the Amazon e.g.) and other details aren’t present in the book - perhaps Alberto Granada provided the makers of the movie with more first-hand data, as he was involved in the production.
Overall it was reasonably entertaining, thought-provoking and well-acted. My favorite scene is where Che and Granado are at night in the Chilean desert, freezing and replying to two impoverished job-seekers to the question why they travel: ‘we travel to travel’…

Opnieuw kon ik het debat enkel uitkijken door mezelf wijs te maken dat het voor een hoger goed was. De uitlatingen van beide kandidaten beginnen voorspelbaar te worden, en het kleuterige format en de verlammende regels maken een doorgedreven discussie en werkelijke interactie onmogelijk. Opnieuw was Kerry veel ‘presidentieler’ dan zijn opponent en als redenaar duidelijk superieur. Bush had weer een aantal stamel-momenten en vertoonde wat chimpansee-smoelentrekkerij, maar beging geen noemenswaardige blunders.
Ronduit ergerlijk waren de ellenlange ontboezemingen over religie - in schril contrast met bijvoorbeeld de aandacht die aan een onderwerp als ‘wetenschappelijk onderzoek’ werd geschonken (nihil); Kerry had nochtans kunnen scoren door de belachelijke ’stem cell research’ politiek van Bush duidelijker aan de kaak te stellen. Beide heren zouden wat mij betreft het oeuvre van de fantastische Richard Dawkins eens mogen doorlezen (het essay ‘Viruses of the mind’ is een goed begin). Maar goed, blijkbaar hebben de US dit alvast gemeen met de islamitische wereld: het is ondenkbaar dat een niet-religieus individu tot president of leider ge/verkozen wordt.
Het is nu gedaan met de rechtstreekse ‘confrontaties’, het is aftellen naar election day. Voor het eerst sinds lange tijd heb ik het gevoel dat Kerry Bush kan/gaat kloppen - wishful thinking?
Overigens, voor een ietwat amusantere opinie over het debat kan u zoals gewoonlijk bij de Rude Pundit terecht…

20000 Monster miles!

Appropriately celebrated by doing a Kings Mountain - Highway 1 - Pescadero - Alpine Rd loop (a favorite loop of mine, due to the proximity, lovely scenery, gorgeous and endless twisties and limited amount of cagers roaming these roads). Had to replace my rear brake pads though first, the old ones were almost completely wasted - a fact that revealed itself to me by the unusual high pitch sound the bike recently started producing when tapping the rear brake…

Saturday - I was enjoying a perfect day with my girlfriend in the city; october days are usually sunnier and warmer than most summer days in San Francisco so we took our advantage. But disaster struck, in the form of a psychotic and misogynistic homeless junk that we passed around Market and Dolores; for no reason whatsoever he started following us, yelling crap (mostly directed at my friend), throwing stuff at us and eventually he attacked me and then ran off. No real harm done, except a black eye that I started developing the day after. The piece-of-shit junk has been put in jail, thanks to witnesses who followed him and directed the cops to him by cellphone. I have zero patience with this sort of lowlife and the one thing I regret is I didn’t have the right Kung Fu skills to rip the moron’s arm apart Quentin Tarantino-style (though he then probably would have sued me) - where is Hombre when you need him most?
Meanwhile, I’m considering
- the beefsteak thing
- leeches (no kidding, according to a coworker of mine who has experience with it that works best)
- holding tissue drenched in eggwhite to the eye; apparently an old Chinese method
So far, I tried one and three (couldn’t find any leeches). And Gavin Newsom should start cleaning out his otherwise very likeable city…

Ik heb het tweede debat tussen Bush en Kerry half en half op de radio gevolgd. Het publiek, bestaande uit ‘onbesliste kiezers die ofwel licht naar Kerry ofwel naar Bush overhellen’ mocht de vragen stellen. Merkwaardig dat dit soort kiezers sowieso bestaat. Maar goed, veel onverwachts viel er verder niet te noteren - Bush deed beter zijn best, en naar mijn smaak bleef Kerry weer ietsje te lief. De Rude Pundit - een volstrekt politically incorrect ‘liberal’ - heeft een soortgelijk gevoel, dat hij op hilarische wijze beschrijft.
Al even hilarisch is deze remix van Bush’s ‘hard work’ tijdens debat nummer een.

Gisteravond debat nummer 2: de clash der running mates, Dick Cheney tegen John Edwards.
Conclusies: Cheney doet het een stuk beter dan Bush, en Edwards is bijwijlen zeer Clintonesk. Meest amusant: Cheney zei de kijkers op een bepaald moment dat ze konden controleren dat Edwards nonsens aan het vertellen was op een onafhankelijke website van de universiteit van Pennsylvania, namelijk Factcheck.com. Hij bedoelde eigenlijk Factcheck.org. En Dick heeft nu ondervonden dat je nooit te goed je dossiers kan kennen, want de beheerder van Factcheck.com was niet echt opgezet met de plotse aandacht van het Bush-kamp en deed de site prompt doorverwijzen naar GeorgeSoros.com, jawel de Wallstreet biljonair - filantroop die net een grootscheepse anti-Bush campagne was begonnen… (zie ABC news)
Overigens is het in de eerste plaats nogal eigenaardig dat ‘Tricky Dick’ naar de site in Pennsylvania refereerde, want er worden minstens evenveel uitspraken van het Bush-kamp op de korrel genomen als van het Kerry-kamp; en Cheney had zelf een goed aantal leugenachtigheden op de kerfstok. Om het met Kolonel Kurtz uit Apocalypse Now (een onvergetelijke Marlon Brando) te zeggen: ‘there’s nothing more that I detest than the stench of lies’…
